So after #Monsterdon was over I started watching a romcom I've never seen before, called The Jane Austen Book Club. It's from 2007 - only 18 years old!

The whole first five minutes is a montage of overwhelming hectic urban daily life, the central focus of which is everyone on their cell phones. Not their smartphones. Their hinged flip phones. Everyone is ACTUALLY TALKING on the phone, it's so quaint!

These poor people have no idea what's coming.

Ruined Ending

Studio execs changed the ending to keep Susan Sarandon's character alive - for sequel purposes. She said later in an interview,

"The thing that made the film interesting to me was this question of, 'Would you want to live forever if you were an addict?' But as the film progressed, the powers that be rewrote the ending and decided that I wouldn't die, so what was the point?

Looks like a lot of adherents have not seen Clash of the Titans (the original).

Never before have so many great actors been handed such a cheesy script— or looked better on Mt. Olympus (yowza)!

While Jason & the Argonauts is a better movie overall (die/hill, not arguing) Clash is clearly the right choice for fediverse purposes.

And today is also Ray Harryhausen's birthday, so [chef's kiss] the Fates must have decreed this turn of events!

How many of us are watching Jaws tonight?

It's such a good film, so well put together.....being on Monsterdon you see so many examples of people doing everything wrong making a movie, it's a delight seeing it done right.

lol, that Mayor is every political figure currently in power really....

🦖#MONSTERDON Goodbye!

Thank you @Taweret for hosting this Exceptional Exercise on Sci-Fi Filmmaking! Someday I will have the words to adequately explain how much this event means to me.

and thanks @Cherizilla for the Bingo card! My card had "sharply parted hair", and I could hardly focus on the movie after reading it.

And THANKS to the Real Time Film Analysis Squad: Superb tootstream! I'm afraid we may find the next movie to be much lower quality in comparison to this one. If we're lucky.

The planet Altair IV is mentioned in Star Trek episodes and movies over and over. Even Altair water is canon.

🪐 But where did that planet name come from originally?

Because Gene Roddenberry was heavily influenced by FORBIDDEN PLANET (1956), he used the name of the planet from that movie.

But that's not the only connection between Forbidden Planet and #StarTrek.

More tonight on #Monsterdon 🦖 where we enjoy FORBIDDEN PLANET.

Yeti Movie Pros and Cons:

PRO:
* weird tragic plot line
* characters I could tell apart
* surprisingly mostly good soundtrack
* includes fun 1970s hardware, like "giant computer", "retro jitsi machine", "yellow cop car with two sirens like a star destroyer's scanner globes" and "awkward yeti oxygen machine"
* horny

CON:
* I'm confused what the evil plot was
* rampage scenes were awkward and strange
* why was the yeti screaming
* poor yeti
* horny

In honor of this week's #Monsterdon film, Tentacles, I'll be sharing a fun octopus fact every day. 🐙

Octopuses are super smart! Scientists have found that they can solve complex puzzles, plan for the future, and escape enclosures. They apply what they've learned to future challenges. One captive octopus, Otto, used his siphon to squirt water at an overhead lamp he found annoying, repeatedly shorting it out. 🧠

On this day (November 4) in 1988, John Carpenter's THEY LIVE was released.

Did a recent rewatch of this recently and it holds up. Disturbingly accurate as to what's still going on in the world today (and maybe has always and will always go on in the world, with corruption, greed, etc.)

A fascinating, terrifying film.

i saw this movie in an old town theater en Mayagüez with mami and baby bro sometime in the 1970s.

it’s one of my favorites for two reasons:

- the monsters terrified me so much, had nightmares for weeks.

- shortly afterwards Star Wars came out and changed everything and one of the selling points of the movie was that a big chunk of the FX crew had worked or been mentored by Harryhausen.

Ray Harryhausen is still the best.

so was the story of that movie how this scientist king had enslaved the phoenix inside of a mountain to be his power plant and so the gods spawned hercules to stop him but also made him fall in love with the woman that one of the gods had promised to sacrifice to refuel the power plant except another woman who stole the talisman from the core of being gave him a ride there and he was going to be married to the daughter of the evil scientist king but he kicked their ass back into space the end #monsterdon

The thing about Godzilla (1998) is that it was bad in a way #Monsterdon movies usually aren't.

Usually when a Monsterdon movie is bad, it's because they didn't have the budget to pull it off, or their concept was just weird, or their technical or artistic skills just weren't up to it.

Godzilla (1998) had all those things in spades and more, but it still sucked. Because it was just *bland as shit.*

When a Monsterdon movie is bad, it's usually bad in an INTERESTING way. The tricks to doing something on a low budget are neat, or the weirdness of the concept is compelling, things like that.

Godzilla (1998)'s only passion was in tallying up how much branded ice cream they could sell if they added in ANOTHER scene that reminded people of Jurassic Park.

How compelling :/

Hollie

hollie@social.coop

Things we learned:

1. Jean Reno can really complain about coffee

2. Matthew Broderick saw that scene where his character is buying a bunch of Godzilla pregnancy tests and still thought this film was a good idea

3. Madison Square Garden holds many secrets (and gumballs)

4. Hank Azaria can make any role good, it is The Power of Hank

Thanks everyone! And thanks to @Taweret for hosting!

:)

#MonsterdonSavesChristmas !!

Monsterdon is raising money for charity this week and you can win some cool stuff that monsterdonners have made!

its a giveaway. (not a raffle) we're not collecting money or selling tickets or anything

how it works:

any time this week before monsterdon (or like now if you want 👀) make a donation to charity, screenshot it (scrub your personal info! we don't want it!) and DM the screenshot to:

@xoagray

(NOT to ME. we want to keep the tally straight)

we are recommending as charities the Trans Lifeline and the Rainbow Railroad but you can give to a different charity if you want

donate any amount you like (also if you can't afford to donate you can still be entered. you will have the same odds of winning something regardless, one entry per person, void where prohibited, etc etc)

deadline for donations: the end of the monsterdon movie on Sunday night!

in order to properly fuck off into the sea, you must have sea things left to do, or else exist in a universe where you can just go and bide time at the bottom of the ocean until you are needed again like godzilla. the swamp thing fucked off into the swamp despite having renounced the central goal of curing hunger, so this sea fuck off can be categorized as a "fucking off into tragedy" as the coordinate pillars of the fuck offer have dissolved and the medium that is fucked off into represents an abyss of purposelessness #monsterdon

Weird how some of these B movies really have two plots that barely touch.

The story of the air force Frankenstein who gets damaged could have been its own movie.

And so could aliens coming to earth to steal women.

But somehow they used both of those ideas, and still had to use mountains of stock footage to pad the film out to feature length.
