⁉️ TRIVIA AND THE ARGOS ⛵🌊

RUINS

During filming of tonight's feature, a big scene with the Argo off the coast of Italy was ruined when a replica of the Golden Hind sailed into view. The film 'Sir Francis Drake' (1961) was coincidently filming at the same location. That production's scene was ruined as well.

Tensions were dispelled when producer Charles H. Schneer shouted, "Get that ship out of here! You're in the wrong century!"

The #monsterdon stats are gonna be late today. I “fixed” the code over the weekend. Which is why it isn’t working. 😜

And the movie fucks off into… a new canon for Doctor Who where The Doctor is named Dr. Who, I guess?

It was uneven, but it had its moments. Most of them were in the first 70% of the movie, the last act *really* drags its feet and doesn't stick the landing on much of anything.

But it *does* have Peter Cushing, so there's that

I've seen more than one person commenting on tonight's #Monsterdon presentation of Peter Cushing saying that they've never seen any Dr. Who.

Just wanted to point out that the two Cushing movies are like Doctor Who written by someone who's watched the TV show with the sound turned off. Everything looks kind of the same (except for the TARDIS interior which is dreadful) only in color, but everything else is very VERY different.

It's like "Okay okay. Old guy. Time Machine. Salt shaker bad guys. Got it. Script in the morning."

oh god it's saturday already THIS WEEK ON #MONSTERDON the weekly monster movie watch party! Tomorrow, in fact! Sunday at 9pm Eastern (that's 1am Monday UTC) come watch a goofy monster flick with the nerds of the Fediverse!

This week we're watching THE 4D MAN (1959) in which a man discovers what time is! No, I'm kidding, it's about a scientist who becomes able to phase through solid matter. Eh, Romulans do it every day ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The flick's available on Tubi free with ads: tubitv.com/movies/100007584/4-

Or you can download from Archive.org over here: archive.org/details/4-d-man-19

See you there!

Sadly, after this film became popular, large number of fairies were captured in the wild and sold to parents whose children demanded fairies of their own.

The original Gojira films worked because they torque certain cultural/historical anxieties in post-war Japan. This one works similarly on the USAmerican imagination by wrecking a food court and showing cartoon characters in humanface.

I'm sorry. A giant lizard, I can believe. This many helicopters in formation without _any_ mechanical faults? Get the fuck outta here. Just have the soldiers start casting spells at this point

This Sunday at 9pm Eastern (that's 1 am Monday UTC) it's #MONSTERDON! The weekly monster movie watch party in which we... Well, it's rather self-explanatory actually. Come watch a goofy monster movie with us!

This week it's GODZILLA (1998), the atrocious American version with an irradiated gecko or iguana or something. Frankly, I'd prefer the one with Raymond Burr.

The flick's available free with ads over on Tubi: tubitv.com/movies/694144/godzi

Or you can download from Archive.org over here: archive.org/details/godzilla.-

See you Sunday!

we will be watching:

Death Race 2000 (1975)

"In the year 2000, America is a totalitarian regime on the brink of collapse. The most popular sport in this dystopia is the Transcontinental Road Race, where teams earn points for logging the fastest time and for mowing over the most innocent pedestrians in the process. This year's competitors include Frankenstein (David Carradine), who is rumored to be more machine than man, and the tough-as-nails "Machine Gun" Joe Viterbo (Sylvester Stallone). Some have a plan to stop the race.."

@CactuarJoe Best (as film): Overall, gotta go with Forbidden Planet. Game-changer in so many ways, set trends that lasted decades. Honourable mention: The Hunger, better in many ways but damaged by studio insistence.

Worst: Invasion of the Star Creatures. This movie has everything: vicious misogyny that doesn't even know it's sexism, severe racism that doesn't know it's racism, failed GI comedy that can't even get the rote parts right, and holy _gods_ so dull. 0 out of infinity.

And the movie fucks off into blown-out Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor

That was pretty fun for a 1972 jam.

Well done everyone, looking forward to seeing the final #MonsterdonSavesChristmas total and the lucky giveaway winners. I pulled myself out of the giveaway pool since I won a painting last year, but I am pre-emptively jealous of whoever gets that sweet Godzilla d20!
