+ community, is a travesty.

Any way, I've probably rambled on too long. Long story short: ACAB, Scottish sweaters = good, inn-keepers daughters = hot, masks = fun, we don't have enough henges any more.

Thanks everybody for watching! Thanks @Taweret for hosting! Have a great week, see you next Sunday!

apparently he was also in the late 1980s Beauty and the Beast TV show, so i'm sure i saw him there, coz i watched ALL of that, and IMDB tells me he played someone named Duncan in Babylon 5, so i must have seen him there too, but i don't remember that. #monsterdon

@steggy @Taweret i'm reading david graeber's "pirate enlightenment" rn and it has some echoes with the malagasy pirate societies that were a combination of european pirates actually being pirate kings and native peoples sort of coming to some equilibrium of power where the spoils of piracy were good and we sort of fuck around with these pirates to make them think they are kings #monsterdon

Pretty sure the first time I heard about wicker men was playing Nethergate: Resurrection - great game if you like Celtic age Briton with a magical turn based combat game with a lot of reading, and basically any game from Spiderweb Software I recommend (love the G.I.F.T.S.!) - because the Celtic side opens with a sacrifice like that.

Didn’t know they also stuck animals in there at the same time. If the main point is the human sacrifice, what are they, like side dishes? #Monsterdon

@morganmay i mean, really, no thanks, but i did watch the #monsterdon movie with all the bees and didn't die. i might put up with a few shots of bees for some hilariously bad Nic Cage...?

@Taweret yeah its an old dehumanization trope, despite christianity having exactly the same kind of sacrifice rituals. like i thought that the twist ending was going to be that 'it doesn't mean literally sacrificing someone's life' bc of the way they kept splicing in the sacrament scenes #monsterdon

@Taweret its complicated right like they didn't paint the cop in a sympathetic light at all but they also did lean into the "superstitious natives are wrong about Science" trope which isn't great. it felt like they wanted to paint a very sinister picture of the people on the island even if that mostly failed and it just seemed like people Having a Culture. cults are bad because they hold people against their will and have systemic abuse and etc. but this just wasn't that and so like the decision to make them sacrifice the cop against his will anyway seems odd, esp. since their other rituals included mock sacrifice like the blade ritual. #monsterdon

#monsterdon So how did this go over in the 70s? Were people more on the cop's side?

I guess I have family who wouldn't think he was overdoing it with the religious disgust even today.

ritual sacrifice compares very favorably with the contemporary climate change grifts of carbon capture and whatnot tbh where the sacrifice is of our public body to be gobbled up by fossil fuel industry proxies #monsterdon

Well, that was a weird movie, but usually there is a monster I can cheer for in my weird movie, all I got today was a bunch of creepy people. Can the goat be the monster?

In any case, thanks for hosting @Taweret and thanks everyone for posting, it was definitely an experience πŸ˜€

If you want to read about actual Druids then I recommend Ronald Hutton's Blood and Mistletoe. It has everything we actually know about the Druids.

"Others have figures of vast size, the limbs of which, formed of osiers [wicker], they fill with living men, which being set on fire, the men perish enveloped in the flames. They consider that the sacrifice of peoples guilty of theft, or in robbery, or any other offense, is more acceptable to the immortal gods; but when a supply of such people is wanting, they have the right to even sacrifice the innocent.”

I'm not sure about the "there won't be any trace" plan for getting away with the murder. One doughy guy from the mainland basically figured out your whole society in two days and that was with the orgies keeping him all night. #Monsterdon
