The plot's really straightforward guys, not sure why you're having trouble following.

Evil overlord guy went to earth to do research on it...
... but instead of just taking it decided to instead bid on it in a galactic auction, plus do under-the-counter slave trading.

Meanwhile balding scientist robot metallurgist hypnotist colonialist has a plan to form a Dirty Dozen rag-tag group of misfits to fight off the colonising Evil overlord guy.
That involves picking up Norman the Boxing Fight Guy; and Torville & Dean the space-prison-slave escapes formally known as "ME"; as well as psychic card-sharp aged lothario "spider shirt guy".

And now we add "sulky weirdo dumpster robot" to the mix.

And exposition space-force are largely just around to disapprove of the whole scheme and get hyponotised into going along with it.
