This movie would have been stronger without the opening sequence. Just start with the woman arriving at the home of the maverick scientist, who has (let's say illicitly) brought home samples from work because he's tired of the military breathing down his neck. Then the base gets his dying phone call, with him insisting that they have to burn his house down. Only when they play the tape do they learn about the slime mold from Mars...
