So, from some BTS featurettes I've seen, Godzilla was a combination of a few partial animatronics on bigature (big miniature) models, and some CG. I'm not sure what was in use for the underwater scene, but I'm going to say bigature?

(Iguanas can swim, quite well, although I'm not sure what their dive time is normally like or if this is how they swim.)

Why have one nuclear sub when you can have three?

This Godzilla (1998) movie is fun and dumb, but it's a subtly different form of fun and dumb than most of the Japanese Godzilla movies are.

Most of the Japanese Godzilla movies seem both more serious (with hints of darker themes) but also more whimsical (with stranger things happening).

(the OG Godzilla movie is an exception as it's played straight and serious).
