Yo dawg I heard you liked to call grasshoppers so I put an audio amplifier in your audio amplifier so you can call grasshoppers while you call grasshoppers.

Because no one can do a convincing giant locust mating call, the bug scientist tells the general he will need a live giant locust for this plan to work. I'm not sure if they've even killed any of the giant locusts, yet, despite all the tank rounds and flame throwers they've employed.

But they army dudes seem willing enough to send One Guy to go with the bug scientist to try to capture and one.

The bug scientist tells us that the bugs slow down when it is cold. This seems to make their plan to attack chicago a bad one, but I guess it's summer now so they won't all freeze to death.

The lead general plans to evacuate Chicago and then nuke it. The reporter suggests driving the locusts into Lake Michigan, and that gives the bug scientist an idea to attract the locusts to the lake with a fake locust mating call.

After a tense battle, the army is defeated. The news guy tells us that the giant locusts have reached the Chicago south side and also no one should panic, so naturally we get a panicked evacuation scene. Some locusts are chasing people and eating them. We get a scene of locusts crawling on a building and another one where a girl in a towel is doing her hair and then is accosted by a locust.

Washington wants us to bomb Chicago. I think I heard a very far away moan from DC just now…

Everyone's panicking, except Gertrude who had a luxurious shower and is working on her hair, until "Arrrggg!"

So the rest of the movie just drags on like this. With rather dull machinations of controlling the grasshoppers. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Despite the stirring Small Locust documentary, the generals are not convinced that the Large Locusts are a threat and are convinced that the Illinois National Guard can defeat them. But then the lead general gets a phone call that the Illinois National Guard's defensive line was breached by the locusts with thousands of casualties. The general changes his mind.

Situation rooms got way cooler when they went underground and got that big circular light like in most Muse music videos and also that famous movie whose name escapes me.

There's a really great video from Tom Scott about research of the behavior of locusts in large groups using an assload of compuer vision.

The army captain... oh wait this guy's a colonel... the army colonel has declared war on the locusts. He is asking for artillery and air support. The bug scientist warns him that the locusts are too powerful and cannot be defeated by the puny weapons of man and believes that the end of humanity is on hand. So he and the reporter go on a road trip to Washington to tell the Pentagon that the End is At Hand.

Our soldiers wander into the surprisingly mowed woods and hear some Giant Locust Noises. Then a giant locus appears and eats one of them off camera. It advances toward them and so they jog away from it, shooting it with their World War II vintage guns, but it appears to be immune to bullets. Eventually they drive off, still shooting at it.

Okay everyone, separate out! Make yourselves into little snacks, make sure you wear your popcorn leis so the bugs feel cared for and special!

We learn the chatty scientist is actually a bug scientist but you must study the plants to study the bugs. He notices a lack of insects on the ground. Then he looks backwards and A Giant Grasshopper Looking Thing appears, then eats the mute scientist off camera. RIP.

The reporter and the surviving scientist drive off.

So the reporter likes the chatty plant scientist more than the army dudes. She drives both of the plant scientists to a rubble pile for a first date. The chatty plant scientist says that the rubble pile used to be a granary that did not explode, and assumes that birds ate all the grain. All the grain. They did not miss a single grain. The birds were very hungry.

The army finally lets the reporter take pictures of the town so we see piles of rubble everywhere. While driving back the reporter tells the army captain about all the war reporting she did and how tired she is of seeing ruins and the horrors of war.

He follows up on her maudlin reflections by asking her out to a bar, but she changes the subject.

#Monsterdon I love how in movies like this everybody knows the newspaper reporter and has fond memories of reading their articles.

As though people actually remember the names of newswire writers.

You'll notice the cavalier way she ejects flash bulbs. Nope, not going to even bother picking them up, or recycling them, let the townies, whatever CHUDS they turn into, let them step on those bulbs and get enraged. That's the reason for the Act 3 attack. G-D Flashbulbs left willy-nilly, LAZY WOMAN. FETCH THE COFFEE.

I like that she's suddenly a hard boiled film noir detective
