Beginning of the End

These tomatoes cannot be eaten... they are... "ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES!!!” And you thought that too. Deep down inside, you saw that tomato and you heard the soft thump of rolling killer tomatoes. You can lie to yourself, but you can't lie to the rest of us.

Reporter lady climbs a hill and takes a picture of... something. We don't see what it is, but she is very Shocked and Appalled!

Then an army guy materializes out of the ether and snatches her camera. She appeals to his manager, an army captain, who likes her because he read a book she wrote about Korea (probably the war). He explains that the town of Ludlow has vanished overnight and we don't have any bodies.

the cross insignia all of these guys is wearing is wigging me out. I guess it's supposed to be a unit emblem, what they had lying around in Costuming. or this unit has a LOT of medics.

We think maybe it was some kind of Backrooms thing

Captain has a beautiful butt-trench-chin. I think Luke Skywalker wants to fly into that deep crevasse and shoot his blasters into the exhaust vent, causing his face to explode like Praxis in Star Trek. KABOOM.

There are no mountains in Illinois. But we smile and nod anyways.

Terencio

With a car that big, she could probably take out any monster she ran into, including most kaiju.

Next two cops are on a patrol, presumably looking for a nice restaurant. They find the car where the teens were making out in earlier but it has been squished. They suspect homicide and dutifully report the squished car via their cop phones and a swarm of investigators appear.

Um, I'm not car 88, I have a name. Its McKinsey. But you won't need to know that for the rest of the movie because I'm going to be dead.

See you're getting water intrusion in your credits, that's what's causing the warping. I can fix it for you, but it won't be cheap.

In the category of "growing giant vegetables has Consequences" I give #BeginningOfTheEnd 5 out of 5 stars. It did pretty well on the Food of the Gods Bingo card, though not quite a #MonsterdonBingo.

Our leads --- a reporter with a war experience and an entomologist --- often sound like they know what they're talking about. The first third when they figure out what's happening is pretty good. The middle third when lots of military stock footage is composited with slightly grainy enlargements of grasshopper mainly marks time until a scientific solution is found. In the last, and shortest, third it works. All the bugs jump in the lake.

+1 for Chicago
-1 for killing a sympathetic deaf guy
+3 for crude but believeable effects

All in all, a watchable #monsterdon.
Thanks @Taweret for hosting. Thanks @cherizilla for the bingo card archive. Thanks @miru for Ultraman and the Bugs.

And a big thank you to @Taweret for tonight's choice of feature. You couldn't go wrong with giant atomic insects in the 50s.

I wasn't watching this one as intently, but I believe we had no smoking and no coffee.

Death count of several thousand, mostly off-screen.

Annoying repetitive sound (the "Grasshopper Screech" for what seemed to be the entire last half of the film.

#Monsterdon Even the part where they were going to bomb chicago but decide not to at the last possible moment had no tension.

There's so many movies where that's a tense and dramatic moment. Here it was about as exciting as ordering a pizza. They just called the pilot and told him to go home, and he did.

#Monsterdon Well, that was a very by-the-numbers "Them!" rip-off with no real surprises or interesting moments at all.

The bug photography, and compositing was ok, but it never looked amazing.

And they never bothered to build a giant bug, not even for the one trapped in a cage! So we never actually saw the bugs do anything. All the carnage happened off screen. We just see them walking around.
