Yeah, that was actually a lot scarier the second time through. The first time, I was too busy trying to figure out what kind of weird mind control was going on, and was disappointed at the big reveal. I had thought these women had been physically altered, which to me was a much scarier idea than just being killed and replaced by a robot. My fiancee at the time had a different take: her previous relationship had been with someone who fell in love with her strength and independence, but quickly started trying to change and control her. To her, the idea that a man might replace his wife with a compliant android if he could was not a difficult leap at all.

The plot was very tightly woven, and not at all insulting to the audience. Two moments stood out for me: Charmaine's husband being too drunk to drive himself home in one scene, and in the very next she’s changed; and the psychiatrist agreeing with Joanna on how crazy her theory sounds, but nevertheless advising her to take appropriate steps. No decision feels forced for the sake of the plot.

It’s not surprising this movie came out when it did, when the women’s movement was beginning to score some victories, and the reaction to it was in full swing. Nor is it surprising that it’s been treated like a joke ever since. The premise may be fantastic, but the fear underlying it is very real. That’s just how power dynamics are.

Good night, #monsterdon. Can’t wait to see what @4 8 15 16 23 42 has for us next week.

As someone who has swung wildly between gender conformity (to their gender assigned at birth) to non-conformity (looking as much as they could as the opposite gender without medical intervention) this movie played with my head in ways I have to say I do not like.

As in I'm not sure how happy I'm going to be getting dressed this week no matter *what* I wear or how I end up looking. And I'm really, really happy there is likely to be fewer people around work than usual.

Movie messed with me more than I realized while it was playing...

@paco this is the more fun sequel actually. all the replaced women gaining awareness, and rebelling and dealing with both sexism and issues of identity around 'oh i'm not me i'm a replacement for someone who is dead' (which is a favorite fiction trope of mine so i'm biased)

@jonny @Infoseepage @ricci now if you want a more progressive version of the same horror movie, you have a town of diverse couples (including same gender couples) and then flip a coin during the writing process for which member of the couple gets replaced. equal opportunity shitty spouses >_<

of course that doesn't resonate in the exact same way re: sexism, but

An inadvertently good movie on !

Were the monsters the hot robot housewives? Wait – no, the monsters were the men! And no cheap masks.

Maybe next week "The Mexican Wrestling Women versus Creepy Suburban Husbands?" and a few bad plastic monster masks would help too.

@ramsey Yeah, that's how it goes. We can try to be a bit more proactive in the future about advertising a good downloadable version, which should help with that problem, but it's a volunteer effort.

The "official" source is usually Tubi or some other free ad-supported streaming site. @Taweret will mention at least one good streaming option in her posts during the preceding week.

Okay. Things just got interesting when Joanna told Claude she'd help him if he could convince his wife and the other women to find time for her.

@jonny anything is better than the remake where Walter saves Joanna because he Loves Her, Actually and Diz is actually a Stepford *husband* because the whole town was his wife Glenn Close's idea #monsterdon

I’ve never seen the 2004 one but I almost kind of want to now, just to compare.

It takes a bit of poking around to find a good version, but somebody usually posts a good link at some point earlier in the week. Normally I watch the hashtag and download any link people share, then on Sunday I pick whichever one seems to be the best quality.

I can't help but feel like that movie was an allegory on the whole phenomenon in many neurodivergant people referred to as "masking".

Like... in the end, it's "FIT IN, YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!"

Boy howdy, brings back so many great memories. Mom screaming and all snot-filled about being a perfect little Stepford Wife. Yeah, it hit hard and it hit home for a lot of housewives in the mid 70’s. It became shorthand for that perfromative sameness that everyone was told they should aspire to. Boy, what a mess.

I actually can't tell if they bailed on the parallel stepford line? the criticism probably landed harder on 1970s audiences to just be like "men would rather have robots than actually be in a relationship with a woman" but it is a much less interesting point imo #monsterdon
