#Monsterdon i wonder how the rock's doing
Really tempting fate there with the News guy, I like it.
Mock Hubris, spit in it's face
Turns out this is filmed in Lucerne Valley, California, says #Imdb
#Monsterdon I take it back. He canβt identify obsidian, heβs no geologist.
Awww, they're Science Buddies
Mark Twain?
Seriously though, I'm a white guy and the whiteness of this town is making me feel unwelcome....but I guess that was the point, wasn't it?
So far we have two noteworthy characters: the rocks and the soundtrack.
I wouldn't mind more of this.
lol @ reasons to get the rock wet by accident
Is this set in Mayberry?
Raging obsidian!
dramatic rock music. er, not that kind of rock music
That rock was really pissed off
Are the Monoliths like Mogwai's, you can't get them wet?
If you see something, say something. Unless it's a rock.
Flintstones font #monsterdon
Good Monolithic font! Itβs a bit like the Flinstones
#Monsterdon
FROM INFINITY AND BEYOND: METEORS
Sounds like a geology class gone horribly wrong. #monsterdon
well the meteors start coming
and they don't stop coming
Talking about asteroid impacts (and atmospheric effects) in 1957 is pretty forward looking.
@ottaross I think someone realized they needed a reason for her to be in this film separate from the Ginny Simpson story which just petered out #monsterdon
@Zerofactorial In my science project? None. They were all as guilty as sin. #Monsterdon
@Newpa_Hasai
The municipal and government leadership were all reasonable.
Today, half the town would blame the government, and demand the right to stay on their land and defend it against the obvious fake news nonsense giant rocks.
#Monsterdon #TheMonolithMonsters
@blogdiva Right? For a 50s film, there wasn't much "red menace". But it definitely set up a black and white conflict. #Monsterdon
@kcarr2015 I think it's all taken relative to the complete lack of an ending we usually get
@Lazarou Yeah, in Ben's case he did have that crummy overheating vehicle, and the parents were old, so not worth worrying over #monsterdon
@raindrops_and_roses @cheribaker I endorse this statement! π
#Monsterdon I dunno why everybody is so happy with this ending, as there are still a bunch of killer rocks just laying around that damn mountain waiting for the next rainfall! π
#TheMonolithMonsters
@himbovoorhees You have a solid future in 1950s science. You're a natural. π #monsterdon
@Zerofactorial (they were Poor)
@brooke At least there *was* a monster (of sorts) this time
@Lazarou I think he was just implying the repairs are coming out of his paycheck from now on #monsterdon
#Monsterdon Damnit, Dave blew the dam and washed away all those cool miniatures!
@msh @Taweret The space rocks are some downstream town's trouble now, that's all they wanted #monsterdon
@blogdiva
Yours is the most plausible read I think I saw tonight, so like a morality tale where the kids need to drink their silicon/saltwater tonics to keep on the straight and narrow #monsterdon
oh it's not! these are actually good miniature destruction shots! :D
Epilogue: Ginny turned out just fine after her ordeal. In fact, she married a Supreme Court justice #monsterdon
WOW! Destroying the miniatures with a flash flood was nicely done. #Monsterdon
Ha! Monoliths not so monster-y NOW, eh?
#Monsterdon
The moral of the story is that if you're in the middle of a crisis and don't want to be bothered by cute kids you can send them all on a fake mission and never have to deal with them again #monsterdon
#Monsterdon
Come to that, there's not really much indication these things are even alive -- just some wacky geochemistry.
They don't even seem to have the obvious armchair philosophical conversation about that (yet, anyway).
The monolith advancing scenes are cool...
@foolishowl No, the reason they were so concerned about reaching the governor was so the writers could set up a cheesy joke at the end. #Monsterdon
#Monsterdon rocks fall everyrock dies
#Monsterdon So can't the rocks like dry out and get rained on again and back to being a problem???
@jonny Though #Monsterdon kind of pushes the limits there
So the reason they were so concerned about reaching the governor was just to avoid the legal consequences of blowing up the dam?
also the miniatures of the monoliths are fucking stellar, the composite shots are really good, and the other models aren't bad at all, particularly the farm we see get rocked over. visual fun for me ^_^
DRY CLEAN ONLY #MONSTERDON
@rebeld Shh! Weβre not supposed to think about that. #Monsterdon
Wait, did they just film these monolith models falling over once from a bunch of different angles and just use it over and over again?
#Monsterdon
This movie was 1950βs click bait.
How do we get people to watch our movie?
Put monster in the title!
But there are no monsters.
It doesnβt matter, my the time they figure that out itβll be too late.
Thank you @Taweret for hosting! And @ryan for the live stream! Another fun #Monsterdon in the books!
#Monsterdon Sure blow the dam while y'all are hanging out jawing in the water flow path.
They really should try first to negotiate with the leader of the monoliths to come to a peaceful solution #monsterdon
That's Enough Movie For Now. #Monsterdon
Wait, is this a real denouement? In a Monsterdon movie?
Abrupt ending as per usual. So satisfying!
@rebeld So, not necessarily. There may be a rock between the salt and the underlying water preventing the salinity from penetrating.
aww even the end titles are made of monoliths!
@raindrops_and_roses They weren't on an A-movie budget #monsterdon
@raindrops_and_roses The alien rocks grow when they come into contact with water, so they were using the groundwater to grow
#Monsterdon also, like... Dams can open. They don't always need to be blown up
So if the meteor had just landed in an ocean it would have been a non issue.
so wait problem solved? i thought that was just to buy them time. aren't all the rocks that didn't run into the lake still back there growing infinitely from some unknown fuel source? #monsterdon
Water is nothing but unflavored coffee!
Honestly that was more denouement than we usually get!
With the salt water, does this qualify as the monster effing off into the sea? #monsterdon
Fin!
Wow, a whole minute dedicated to denouement. Truly the rarest of #Monsterdon occurrences
#Monsterdon nobody, NOBODY studies geology thinking they'll one day become superheroes and save the world. We're not talking enough about how wildly unequipped these people are to deal with any of this. They were just trying to avoid doing math and interacting with other human beings.
Yay! Miss Barrett is happy anyway, and that's good enough for me.
#monsterdon And thus the power of white science defeats the black menace from spac-
Wait what the fuck. Who make this movie, the KKK?
#Monsterdon π πΏ βοΈ π π΅ π±
But what's gonna happen to all that citrus?
@CactuarJoe that's how he ends up in the Ouran Host Club. #monsterdon
@aprilfollies How many innocent people perished? #monsterdon
Kaboom! There goes the dam.
#Monsterdon
Little did they know that while they'd stop the siliconitrophes, all the salt attracted the salt vampires #Monsterdon
Stock waterfall footage! Generally nice miniature work, though.
#Monsterdon I did a science project on crystal growth from a supersaturated solution that looked just like this. #TrueStory
Governor trying to figure to be pro-dam or anti-dam #monsterdon
#Monsterdon In 2024, what percentage of US governors would let you blow up an expensive privately owned dam to save the world from evil multiplying rocks? #TheMonolithMonsters
Dave's got big Andy Griffith energy #monsterdon
#Monsterdon Timbeeeeeerrrrrr!
Evil Rocks Fall and Break in the Desert ASMR
Did the rocks get the governor? D:
@jonny the censors cut the part where the salt water flowed into the negative cleavage #Monsterdon
I'm so curious what effect they used for the falling rocks #Monsterdon #monolithmonsters1957
The line must be drawn here! This far, no feldspar! #Monsterdon
They're just crumbling there. Menacingly!
Not sure if this plan is gonna work at all. Also the Governor has gone missing. Too bad thereβs less than 7 minutes left.
#Monsterdon βIf itβs dull and statistical, Iβve written about it.β Oh now theyβre calling out my papers too.
*extremely Lionel Richie voice* π΅ Say-line, say me πΆ #Monsterdon #TheMonolithMonsters
βIf itβs dull or statistical, Iβve written about it.β
I love the journalist! #Monsterdon
"If it's dull or statistical, I've written about it"
I wish the journalist had a bigger role in this movie, he's great.
Itβs great that the rocks fall in slow motion. Gives Dave more time to blow up the dam.
