Whoever wrote this opening song was clearly listening to some Bond themes

Not *understanding* Bond themes, mind you, but listening to them

I might as well just get this out of the way: bats rock. Whatever the bats in this movie do, the humans deserve it, a priori.

Bonnie Van Dyke, that's what they called Dick when he was in Scotland trying to pull off an English Accent

In his dreams :)

For those of you scrolling through your timeline, you're about to hit a big mass of Monsterdon postings about The Bat People (1974).

Should you not wish to read through them, here's how to filter them out, at least on the web browser:
1) right click on the gears & open in a new tab
2) choose "Filters" then "Add New Filter"
3) give the filter a title, check all boxes under contexts, choose hide completely and put "#Monsterdon" in the keyword box.
4) Click on "Save New Filter"

... and you're done.

@moira The director is still alive at 91. No idea if he’s fit for trial.

But he has some fans. thenewbev.com/blog/2017/03/jer is a good overview of his career, with an interesting take on The Bat People:

β€žan early Jameson masterpiece of unhinged homosexual panic […] Cinematographer Matt Leonetti really excels in wrapping this film in velvety darkness allowing the classic man-into-monster movie plot to do it’s illogical thang (sic) while the subtext, if taken into account, becomes more and more logical. […] No reason this film should be as smart as it is. I honestly love it.β€œ

Still a borefest…

@forestine Yeah, some kind of fate thing since he was dreaming and screaming at the beginning, and not for the first time, it seemed from her reaction. And, it was a *delayed* honeymoon, they were already married and sleeping together before this whole adventure. I couldn't stick with the MST3K rewatch (I prefer the Joel years), but I appreciate @ryan showing it after the main viewing so I could catch the beginning minutes I'd missed! #Monsterdon #TheBatPeople

If you're reading this, you're at the tail end of a long stream of posts on the feed about #Monsterdon, a fediverse community movie-watching event.

This week we watched the infamous THE BAT PEOPLE (1974). It had Stan Winston effects, misogyny, rabies, and not a whole lot else.

See the post at the top of this thread for more info:

πŸ¦–#MONSTERDON Goodbye!

Thank you @Taweret for hosting this batsh*t bag of boredom!

and thanks @Cherizilla for the Bingo card! This will be the hardest time I will ever have stamping "A Horny Moment".

And to all the members of the Real Time Film Analysis Squad: The last 90 minutes were saved by your commentary. Note: An explanation for what we just watched is deep in a metaphorical cave. Do not go in there.

The moral of the story is that because bats have those pointy little teeth in those doglike snouts it's reasonable and fine to blame them for all sort of idiot behavior, and how #monsterdon

#Monsterdon reminder to self to add a better disclaimer on content warning posts that DtDD is only as good as volunteers make it and sometimes we’ll have things like β€œsomeone spits” listed while completely ignoring β€œketchup covered state trooper offs himself with a shotgun while the theme song from an unreleased James Bond film plays in the background.”

Apologies for not remembering that from the pandemic run through of mst3k i did but it’s also possible they edited it out because why would you leave that in a movie, even this one?

I think that when I saw this as "It Lives by Night" on MST3K, I forgot about it because 0.) it was a lackluster 'SciFi Channel' episode and 1.) Its plot was nearly identical to one of the plots of "Werewolf", also a lackluster episode (and one that seemed to last four hours, built haphazardly from a failed T.V. show, as per "Time of the Apes" but even less artfully.).

I always have fun with these cheap 70s films, even if they were just an excuse for the production crew to get a paid ski vacation. They have a great "sure, why not" quality to them. Nothing explained or justified. Just "darling, I'm afraid I'm turning into a bat" #monsterdon
