Piranha is make-up artists Rob Bottin and Phil Tippett's first effort. They made 76 rubber piranhas and 4 with metal teeth for close-ups in four weeks. Other people made prosthetics for the fish to rip into.

The movie was so successful that Tippett put together a make-up team that itself became successful in future movies.
