#Monsterdon is this a prequel for Hogan's Heroes?
"Yeah, just ein....ein luftballon. I'm sorry, it's not a very good song."
"What if we add...more balloons?"
Feels a little like a Hogans Heroes episode. Except instead of digging a tunnel they're ... planning to sail away in a balloon?
what is... he doing to those stairs...?
#monsterdon
Is it just me, or is this graded too darkly? I guess it's a storm sequence, so hopefully it's just the one bit.
I always thought that hot air balloon seemed like a singularly impractical mode of transport, what with the lack of control over the direction...
oh well, I'm sure that won't be a problem.
"The Civil War was less than a hundred years ago, how hard can it be to get the hairstyles right?" βthis movie
since my schtick for this movie is "not liking jules verne movies," the opening credits at least share the qualities of what this movie is likely to be: interminably long, loud, and without much happening in it #monsterdon
i didn't know they had the epcot center in the civil war. #monsterdon
@Taweret Bernard Herrmann soundtrack!!
And weβre off, and the score has kicked in immediately with some big bras, timpany, and cymbals. I have high hopes for the βSuperdynamationβ. #monsterdon
Oh it got better. Now it's prune juice.
#Monsterdon #MysteriousIsland
man, pollution was bad in the 60s
Fun fact: Virginia isn't an island.
I hope someone gets to eff off into this lava lamp ocean sometime #monsterdon
Credits guys got paid per-font, apparently. #Monsterdon
oh god SYPERDYNAMATION that's what I shoulda gone with not stop motion xD
Appropriately foreboding music for the opening credits!
Jules Verneβs Mysterious Island is set in a sea of gasoline. #Monsterdon
weirdly star trek music sign also?
wave motion sign?
there were so many signs warning us about this movie
@diazona @jonny Itβs like a divide-by-zero situation. Or, one might say, divide-by-Nemo #Monsterdon
So I guess the giant crab in tonight's #Monsterdon was cancer paguras, 'edible crab' or 'brown crab'.
I don't know my crab species and I don't eat them either, so I had to look it up. Prolly everyone else already knew it
https://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=image&tid=107276&pic=34506
well that movie sure ends, huh #monsterdon
so apparently Atlantis is off the coast of New Zealand? #monsterdon
@jonny Now reading the wikipedia page and we were denied a dog named Top! #monsterdon
@forestine @Crazypedia I think it can be inferred that the pirates sunk their ship but you have to work on it
@moira Union captain: black hair and beard. Union soldier heartthrob: looked sort of like Elvis, clean-shaven. Union good soldier: black. Confederate soldier: square face, sandy blond. Reporter: Lean and dirty blond. Lady Whatsis: British accent. Young woman: indeterminate accent, good thighs. Captain Nemo: dark-skinned (India Indian), white hair & beard. #Monsterdon #MysteriousIsland1961
@Crazypedia they were on their way to Marseilles but idk why it would be just two ladies and the dead captain. also, don't think about the geography too much #Monsterdon
Did we ever get an explanation with how the two ladies ended up on that island? #Monsterdon #MysteriousIsland
Also there's an adaptation from the USSR! #monsterdon
#Monsterdon According to wikipedia there have been nine (9) film adaptations of this Jules Vernes story. Some film nerd somewhere got a doctorate studying adaptations of this one story.
anyway good job everybody and thanks to @Taweret for hosting as always
husband requested we follow up The Mysterious Island with "Jason and the Argonauts" so I guess I'm watching that now too!
#Monsterdon I am mildly disappointed that Nemo didn't make it.
For those of you scrolling through your timeline, you're about to hit a big mass of Monsterdon postings about Mysterious Island (1961).
Should you not wish to read through them, here's how to filter them out, at least on the web browser:
1) right click on the gears & open in a new tab
2) choose "Filters" then "Add New Filter"
3) give the filter a title, check all boxes under contexts, choose hide completely and put "#Monsterdon" in the keyword box.
4) Click on "Save New Filter"
... and you're done.
A big thank you to @Taweret for hosting tonight's #Monsterdon, giant creatures, attempted Verneverse, endless dialog and exploding volcanoes all.
Raw oysters on the half shell
Steamed crab legs
Salad of tropical fruits*
Roast chicken
Wild rice with bamboo shoots*
Root vegetables fried in chicken fat*
Goat milk ice cream with honey
*These are speculative, but I think they're within reason
@moira They had all that fighting in the basket of the balloon, and then later when the captain wanted to be in charge, and then, nada #monsterdon
@trixter And pretty darn realistic! What, did they use the ship from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride? #Monsterdon
@oliphant He's scared of sharks and maritime electrical batteries, that's all #monsterdon
Mysterious Island and the Wizard of Oz. What other films start with escape by hot air balloon? #Monsterdon
For a group #Monsterdon watch, I think I need an additional screen or some overlay software that can follow the hashtag so we can watch the film and the snark at the same time (on my living room TV).
π¦ MONSTERDON GOODBYE! ποΈ
Thank you
@Taweret for this mysterious adventure
and @cheribaker for the Bingo card ("Ouch!" π)
And to the Real Time Film Analysis Squad. Kinda hard to root for the humans in this one.
π¨ Get your #monsterdon gear! Long sleeve shirts for Fall! Mugs for Giant Chicken broth!
https://thediremushrump.threadless.com/designs/monsterdon-doodles-color
@moira Thatβs really accurate. #Monsterdon
Nemo's only regret was not inventing that giant can of Old Bay.
also apparently the translations that existed prior to 2001 were very incomplete?
#monsterdon
Was the fact that they were Civil War soldiers important at all? #Monsterdon
@fluffy Nemo kept giving them supplies. Part of the Mystery on #MysteriousIsland1961 #Monsterdon
@paco how many times do I have to tell you? You drink the beer and you snort the cocaine. #Monsterdon
it's like verne and wells (and shelly for Frankenstein) were the only acceptable SF authors so for decades the only sf movies you could make had to at least pretend to be their shit
@fluffy YES my sister and I were saying keep the basket, let the balloon go, but the people in the movie couldn't hear us. #Monsterdon #MysteriousIsland1961
#Monsterdon The volcano is imminently going to blow up and Nemo has time to train them in all kinds of novel tech and skills. But first, drinks!
so in the original book apparently there is more of a story where they end up setting up shop on the island and there is more of a consistent plot with nemo but there are no giant animals???? #monsterdon
Do Herbert and Elena get married after all? Then split up after a couple of years when they realize they no longer feel the spark they felt among megafauna? That's what the audience is entitled to find out #monsterdon
""We returned to the civilized world"
Well that wouldn't be the world of the 19th Century my friend so was there a wormhole in this plot too?
How many moons do you see?
We could have had giant chickens....
i mean as good as the sfx were i think it's the _dullest_ movie we've watched
i mean i wouldn't swear to that because of immediacy bias but dang i'm sleepy
definitely need more stop motion, less sleepy build shit on the island survival
This movie goes on the list of movies it would be extremely easy to plan a theme menu for
aha, this novel was explicitly a sequel to 20,000 Leagues, so that's why there's so much Captain Nemo stuff in it #monsterdon
#Monsterdon I can summarize this movie in one phrase: and weird shit happened. π
Mad Nemoβs giant food plan rules! #Monsterdon #MysteriousIsland
If you're reading this, you're at the tail end of a long stream of posts on the feed about #Monsterdon, a fediverse community movie-watching event. This week we watched MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (1961).
See the post at the top of this thread for more info:
#Monsterdon ποΈ π π¦ π¦ͺ π¦ π±
We made it to the very abrupt ending!
Thank you @Taweret @cheribaker @JoeWynne for your hosting/bingo/trivia services, and thanks #Monsterdonians for helping us get through this thing in good spirits in spite of our technical issues!
Looking forward to next week, hopefully with giant octopus again!
@jonny I would be tempted to actually go to Milpitas for added effect
@Crazypedia Maybe the bees collected more than just plant reproductive matter haha #Monsterdon
I'm really fascinated by the commercial impulses of filmmaking throughout the ages, where movie X made a bunch of money, so lets make a movie exactly like X, but with a twist. We too can make money!
"also permanently delete the files?"
GODS YES.
#monsterdon
So I guess building your ship carpentry shop in a cave 1000 feet above sea level with a magnificent 5 ft square elevator wasnβt the most ingenious plan after all
@amyfou They're fine, they were born with enough sense to bug out of a place that's this messed up. Probably left like weeks ago #monsterdon
#Monsterdon ........ and it just ends
\o/
in truest monsterdon fashion:
they fuck off into the sea
:D
good show everybody
@CactuarJoe π π π
#Monsterdon ποΈ π π¦ π¦ͺ π¦ π±
so they're not gonna save Nemo or the giant chicken or the giant bees or the giant crab? Like literally none of the good guys survive?
@lorgonumputz Manhattan is the most mysterious island of all #monsterdon
Well, that ended abruptly.
@Infoseepage Are there monsters? I don't remember #monsterdon
#Monsterdon ποΈ π π¦ π¦ͺ π¦ π±
We're at the part where the pirate ship got raised! We're almost done!
Wow, what a fun movie.
I guess my take-away this week is: if you find yourself stranded on a deserted island w/ a bunch of megafauna, one of the early to-dos should be harvesting salt from the sea water, so you can salt & preserve the 5000-lb crab or chicken that you fight off & kill, rather than trying to eat it all in one sitting
Thanks everyone for watching along! Thanks @Taweret for hosting! Have a great week, see you next Sunday!
Mysterious Island 2: 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney
@otheorange_tag @Configures Either that or it's The Dream of Robert E. Lee's Wife #Monsterdon
Whatever floats your boat...which is good because we effed off into the sea just in time to escape the volcano!
THE END
Were the works of Jules Verne really this boring? I feel like maybe they didn't translate well to movies.
But at least we had fantastic effects, cool giant animated animals, steampunk masers, goat leather miniskirts and shorty shorts!
Thanks for another classic #Monsterdon @Taweret !
So they all lived happily ever after, even the man of color. Except for Nemo and that nameless sailor who got the women shipwrecked, hell with them #monsterdon
@Configures @CactuarJoe so a 50s Japanese film? #NotJudging #Monsterdon
Praise Be to @Taweret, the #monsterdomme #monstermom for piloting the democracy of #monsterdon into this safe harbor, plagued with giant animals, a hidden murdercaptain and apparently wheat 40 feet high.
Eat hearty, children. Hopefully these bioengineered foods won't also make you 40 feet high.
I ran out of steam at the end just because the shots were like boat->volcano->boat->volcano->boat->volcano and it all started to bleed together. #monsterdon
@ramsey Obviously he prized his privacy #monsterdon
Another one in the can there, folks!
Thanks for tuning in to this amazing documentary about the civil war... i mean, the delights of being on a deserted isle... i mean Jules Verne... i mean... sigh.
Thanks for a great #monsterdon !
Thanks to @Taweret and @JoeWynne and @cheribaker and @bunnyhero and @CactuarJoe and @yatsu and @SeanAloysiusOBrien and @apLundell and all the other awesome people I forgot to mention.
Until next bat-time, this has been #monsterdon !
@CactuarJoe The octopus was squeezing the Confederate. #Monsterdon
We're watching Krakatoa, East of Java sometime, right?
#Monsterdon ποΈ π π¦ π¦ͺ π¦ π±
It inked!
So ends another #Monsterdon. Our thanks, as always, to @Taweret and all those who posted and lurked, and remember #Monsterdoners: You needn't feel special about it.
The moral of the story is that sometimes the giant creatures are just a proto-billionaire's side hustle and not actual monsters #monsterdon #notmonsterdon
Oh great, theyβre re-destroying Atlantis
#Monsterdon ποΈ π π¦ π¦ͺ π¦ π±
It's a hermit octopus? Or it likes wearing a shell helmet cause it saw Nemo doing that?
And that's a crap. Total drek, I give it 9 out of 10 drekpoints. It could have had even more drek, but I think they ran out of time.
-1 drek point for Giant Monster with good animations keeps it from fulfilling its full drek potential.
Had fun. :D Back to regular programming.
#Monsterdon *nemo turns on the espresso machine*
And Nemo was a Jssus allegory or something THE END #monsterdon
@Configures meh, true. you'd think it could've been floated with the hot air of that guy's accent but... Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
#monsterdon
Called it.
#Monsterdon
