You know, I really miss watching good movies -- maybe someday we will find that diamond in the rough
Oh and also Days of Our Lives #monsterdon
@paco I honestly have always thought it was the name of the Big Bad. I never knew it was the name of the planet.
Everyone's post #monsterdon assignment is to go watch Willow and then Legend and get yer brains melted.
@jonny As a fan of fantasy I will say those are generally not the interesting fantasy epics
You mean that bastard could have unlocked him at any time, but just didn't?! And he doesn't shed even one tear for all the comrades who died along the way? Jerk #monsterdon
#Monsterdon well that was silly fun and very epic
Okay, so I thought I had seen Krull as a kid but no, I did not. Based on the poster art that I saw *forever* in the video stores growing up, I thought for sure Krull was a space movie. #monsterdon
@JoeWynne @RamenCatholic @amyfou Er something about a glaive and the flame between lovers and some horses.
#Monsterdon big slippery house!!
@brooke I can see O'Neill and Teal'c taking one look at the shenanigans on this planet and just turning around and going right back through the gate
Listening to the commentary... Did the director do the narration? #monsterdon
But I don't want a king and queen ruling my world, or their son ruling the galaxy.
This movie sux.

They were long gone. Smart horses go home after dropping off the heroes. #monsterdon
That film put me in a mood to watch Star Trek II actually. #monsterdon
But why didn't *she* get a chance to hurl tongues of scorching flame, movie? #monsterdon
I cast Fireball!
Wow, I am impressed! What a truly epic performance: at various times exciting, emotional, contemplative, tense; all the brass fanfares you could want.
I guess there was something happening on the screen too but that seems unimportant
Thanks as always @Taweret for hosting and everybody for posting! Top-tier experience this week. I don't think I've ever boosted so many toots during one of these. See you all next time!
Think Legend did the dress-and-crown thing for the bride better, though.
#Monsterdon As the Castle fucks off into the sky, we thank @Taweret as always for bringing us together to practice our riffing on a really good bad movie!πΏ
@blogdiva @combatwombat
AHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahaaaaaaaaWAAAAAAAA!?!?!? Why why? Nooo... I'll watch it.
#Monsterdon #Krull
@strangefour This is very true. I think the story has a lot of promise. They were just over-ambitious and tried to fit too much into 120 minutes. They weren't able to pull it off.
I feel that the Fortress had not strictly been built according to code #monsterdon
@helianthropy Well, the plug-ins are refillable? #Monsterdon
Colwyn Googling: how to turn off fire hands Reddit
P. P. S. If you want a much better "science fiction but looks like medieval fantasy" excursion with actually substantial female characters, I recently read Adrian Tchaikovsky's novella "Elder Race" and quite liked it.
The one thing missing from the scene where the pink things shoot out the top of the palace is "I Believe It's Magic" by Mick Smiley. #Monsterdon #krull
@paco Now that you mention it, I'm not sure. I think it might have been the kingdom, but that is just a guess.
#Monsterdon
@wrog flame grilled beasts #Monsterdon
And, that's a wrap! Thanks to @Taweret for the opportunity to make it through Krull in one sitting again!
It was certainly a film, with some very pretty sets and physical effects, and a very overperforming but good soundtrack.
Thanks to @Taweret for hosting! It was a time! :D
@phooky Speaking of movies I've never seen -- here's hoping the next #Monsterdon will be Dragon Slayer!
"Sandy the aurora is risinβ behind us
The pier lights our carnival life forever
Love me tonight for I may never see you again
Hey Sandy girl..."
@TerryHancock trust me, I know. #Monsterdon
I'm sorry @trixter but
Krull > Dune
#Monsterdon #Krull
@CoachJZ It's one of those movies I've got to take a dump afterwards, and sitting on the toilet I'm all like "What did I just watch?
Okay. Finally, Lyssa gives Colwyn.
Goodnight, Monsterdon! Here's hoping I don't have more nightmares of running down those endless anatomical hallways tonight. π
Okay, some of you have five minutes to go, but I'm clicking on the Babylon 5 button to see how good my memory of it is.
See you all later, and thank you for joining in.
@paco She's fake crabby?! --dad #Monsterdon
@jonny Uh oh you have pissed off the SCA and they are coming for you.
I mean that fire of hers looks about as convincing as your average electric fireplace log, come on #monsterdon
Well, that was a movie that had a lot of really cool stuff and also a lot of really cheesy stuff and overall desperately needed an editor to trim a good 20-30 minutes. Thanks to @Taweret for hosting and see y'all next week!
@srol He knew what was up
Just saw the credits; that's my bad, it is NOT a true story.
loved it, super fun swashdorkling flick
haven't seen krull in ages, possibly not as an adult
thanks #Monsterdon
Yikes!
From Wikipedia:
"...The scene involved Colwyn and his men encountering a corridor where the floor opened underneath them via two set pieces "the size of a small house" that were powered by liquid and broke apart before quickly slamming back together.[6]:β53β Marshall explained that doing the sequence gave him nightmares after it was completed. When shooting of the scene began, Marshall took more time to say his lines than the production crew expected, leading to him not making it from the tunnel in the first take. Only one crew member noticed this and was able to stop the machines controlling the pieces, but Marshall "knew that if the machine didn't stop in five seconds, [he] would be dead..."
A glaive, sometimes spelled as glave, is a type of pole weapon, with a single edged blade on the end, known for its distinctive design and versatile combat applications. There are many similar polearms such as the war scythe, the Japanese naginata, the Chinese guandao (yanyuedao), the Korean woldo, and the Russian sovnya.
A glaive typically consists of a single-edged blade approximately 45 centimeters long affixed to a pole measuring about 2 meters. The blade is secured in a socket-shaft configuration, akin to an axe head, as opposed to having a tang like a sword or naginata. Some variations of glaive blades were even forged with a small hook on the reverse side to better engage mounted opponents, earning them the name "glaive-guisarmes."
In the 1599 treatise "Paradoxes of Defence" by English gentleman George Silver, the glaive is described as being used in a manner similar to other polearms like the quarterstaff, half pike, bill, halberd, voulge, and partisan. Silver considered this class of polearms superior to all other hand-to-hand combat weapons.
@RobynGoodfellow @Taweret to be fair wasn't that one with the space rocks that crushed a town or something
it's close
I still love this movie. But it's much better in concept and design than it is in execution. Also it's got some scenes that go on for waaaaay too long. Like Rockclimbing.
Still one of the best fantasy movies of my childhood.
#Monsterdon #Krull
Whey didn't the tiger guy become like a mouse or something?
There's no world where that's a "good" movie but I had a good time watching it. A real stinker I would not get to the 2 hour mark on #monsterdon
#Monsterdon so i'm pretty sure this movie takes place in the stargate sg-1 universe
@CactuarJoe meh, this movie is full of reused bits of other stories, why shouldn't our commentary be the same. (^_^) #monsterdon
Ergo is the Fflewdurr Flan of Krull
Also, everybody back at their kingdom got killed, IIRC. What's their economy going to be based on?
@r343l Well, it *was* 1983.
That movie had sets. #monsterdon
@fabio yeah he got juiced by crusher walls when breaking into the fortress spaceship
Is the Glaive all used up now?
Yup thank you Barclays Mercantile Industrial Finance Limited, y'all totally got the tax writeoff on this one.
@Zerofactorial :ms_eyes: #Monsterdon
Trivia: βDirector Peter Yates reportedly hated making this film so much he took a vacation to the Caribbean in the middle of filming. This led to the special effects team taking a three-week break as well.β
At least that gave them time to flesh out the plot. #monsterdon
Of course in the book the king dies hours later because they didn't wait for the reviving pill to reach full potency, but grandpa didn't read that part to his sick grandson, so #Monsterdon
And they fucked off into the fucking meadow. A meadow for fucking, I mean. #Monsterdon
I think the fire-mares are just the regular horses with leg warmers on. #monsterdon
"So...anyway... I guess we're walking home? Should we? Our kingdom is kinda toast anyway, you wanna just live here now?" #monsterdon
Yay! And the few who didn't die lived happily ever after.
#Monsterdon
honestly what this movie says is that james horner only has like six tricks and he used all of 'em here but only five in star trek
@moira Wait did I miss when Unibrow died? #monsterdon
He reconized Ergo's blood trail
That was a lot of fun, guys, but I'm beat. the Owlbear is off to bed. #monsterdon
Oh, I guess there is actually one (1) other survivor of Torquil's band (the Kid Who Shames You All)
Ugh! What does it mean, and why do I care? I think even the 15-year-old me would have rolled his eyes at this. #Monsterdon
"a girl of ancient name shall become queen" so if you name your kid, like, this world's version of Katniss, she's going to hate you, right? #monsterdon
Loved it, thanks #Monsterdon
Longest explosion in the history of explosions. #monsterdon
@diazona It was clearly the fault of the GC for not confirming that the 321 concrete mix that they ordered was what they received. #Monsterdon
Thanks for the jokes and good company, #Monsterdon !
As always, thanks to @Taweret for pulling this rowdy rabble together. Good times.
okay this concludes a...movie. I was kinda watching #monsterdon but also kinda not because it was too funny to watch the tag stream! thanks all!
So Nyquil was the only one of the criminals that made it?
Ah, the optical effects unit. Now we know whom to blame.
Could have used a pan out shot of tiny bits of the castle flying into orbit.
#Monsterdon #Krull
This whole "running for your life while the building breaks apart and flings itself into space" sequence feels a little gratuitous.
#Monsterdon I have questions about βAnd their son shall rule the Galaxy.β Are Fire Mares spaceworthy?
Welp thanks to @Taweret for hosting this marathon of the extended cuts of Innerspace, Monty Python/Holy Grail, the Neverending Story, Zardoz, and Princess Bride
See you next week friends!!!
i think that was one of my favorite schlockfests in quite a while
"They shall rule our world..."
and if anyone doesn't like it, they can taste The Flamethrower
"Then we won?" Sorry how are their children going to rule the stars or whatever now that they just deleted the only repository of fully working advanced technology on their planet????
WHAT they don't even say the boy is the Seer-Narrator? It's RIGHT THERE, talk about low-hanging fruit!
#monsterdon maybe the real #krull is just the friends we made along the way.
