Invasion of the Bee Girls

@Zerofactorial From what I can tell, this is the best info on them that exists. They were a series of computers designed to be semi-compatible with IBM's System 360 line, but with a different operating system. They offered some instructions the IBM didn't, but you had to recompile your software. This is probably one of the later version and you can see a mix of visual features found in RCA's Spectra 70 line as well as stuff that is more UNIVAC styling. I'd guess a 70/60 or a 70/61.

Fun fact: Invasion of the Bee Girls came out the same year as Hellstrom's Hive, a lesser-known Frank Herbert novel that also has a secret underground bee cult whose women kill human men by wearing them out sexually.

Herbert was inspired by an insect satire-documentary called The Hellstrom Chronicle (1971). So my question is, was tonight's movie inspired by Herbert, or was it just a sleazier riff on similar themes? #Monsterdon

so fyi, royal jelly does look kind of milky white like that!

from wikipedia: "Royal jelly is a honey bee secretion that is used in the nutrition of larvae and adult queens." "During the process of creating new queens, the workers construct special queen cells. The larvae in these cells are fed with copious amounts of royal jelly. This type of feeding triggers the development of queen morphology, including the fully developed ovaries needed to lay eggs."

Also Sprach Zarathustra... really? Well, the kettle drums I guess... but... it belongs to 2001. Ah well.

I don't know about you, but when some errant gunshots turn _my_ lab into a sparking electrical hazard, my first instinct is to immediately grab for the conductive metal surfaces while making sure I am also thoroughly grounded, it's just a reflex

So..... the couple didn't make it through the whole movie

But wait, does the Black soldier live? Did I blink?

There really is an awful lot of completely gratuitous nudity in this movie. This Herb/Harris scene could have been dramatically truncated or just played offscreen entirely.

I appreciate that Agar isn't giving Joe a hard time about being in a relationship with Dr. Murger. I'll be honest, I expected worse.

Yet more sex and S&M, why it's like this film is trying to push sex

He's tuning VOA on Tits of America. Adorable little birds, mostly little fuffs of feathers and tiny little beaks.

Wait, what's with the random nudity..?

Katie: "nobody makes out with glasses on! They get all smudged up!"

Okay, so we have opera singers, 70's ghetto jazz, and kettle drums. This is going to be kitch.

In real life, male bees die during sex because they ejaculate so hard their dick ruptures and breaks off.

Supposedly if you happen to be standing near them while they're mating, you can actually hear a popping noise.

Imagine if tonight's #monsterdon had used REAL bee facts, instead of pulling punches and giving all the dudes heart attacks.

@moira @blogdiva It was very unsexy, but I think that was the point.

Like, maybe the entire point is that sex is awkward and gross, and you shouldn't do it.

Or maybe I'm just trying to read something into it that's not there. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Complicated feelings about this one.

Graphic? Absolutely, this needed a CW for the SA scene. And that car death was seriously unpleasant as well.

"So horny society collectively forgot about it" 70s filmmaking? Yes.

Bad? Well… I don't think so. The production value is pretty high, the acting is not bad at all (but the characters kinda are), and the writing is… present? It's tossing some Themes around sorta-maybe?

Doesn't stick the landing, but I can see a way this *could* have stuck the landing.

Let's go with "provocative"

(Edit: filter above opinion through a personal bias for irrationally liking 70s movies)

so I never imagine I'd recommend any of our movies to others to view but wow this is definitely NOT one I hope to ever see or hear from again.

Nevertheless, thank you @Taweret for hosting, @Cherizilla for bingo, @JoeWynne for trivia and to all of y'all for the fun. Let's all just bee good to the bees in our lives, Monsterdonians!

Come on, subtitle person, that "be" needed a second letter "e", critical missed opportunity.

There is this inexhaustible supply of professors who get seduced and murdered by bee girls, but I don't understand why

the blonde scientist woman is going to have to deus ex machina here in these last 10 minutes of the movie, but since she wears sunglasses sometimes, unclear whether or not she will come down on the side of pro or con bee girl #monsterdon
