HOWEVER I am _not_ actually ready in the sense of "starting the movie at the same time as everyone else", dangit. Like two minutes behind over here, working our way through the hilariously swoopy opening credits.

Hit me with your timed mute (this one is about an hour and a half long?), or join in!!

#monsterdon I feel like they opened up a forgotten storage unit and found all the sets from the original movie covered in plastic and cosmolene, and then decided to redo the movie based on that.

Also this nurse may be the only person with self-preservation in a horror movie I've ever seen.

'I'm not scared, I'm petrified' and 'What am I even doing here'

#monsterdon My partner mentioned that this movie had serious 80’s quicksand tropes, but when the 90’s rolled around, quicksand was about less of a threat. It was always a macguffin.

If a child was going to have a nightmare about aliens, it makes so much more sense that it would mostly be set in his school, and the field behind his house.

In the original, a lot of the action happened in places a kid wouldn't really even think about.

If you're going to do the "It's all a dream" twist, it's nice that it's at least a dream he's likely to have had.

I'm reading through the wikipedia page for the film and what's fascinating is how many of the big publications of the day reviewed it. Both the New York Times and the Washington Post. So different from how they currently approach film. #monsterdon

#Monsterdon well that was fun. relatively close to the original in overall story and some details, but with much better effects and mostly worse acting

i remember as a kid the idea of the copper-powered guns & tech really captured my imagination

the US ending is more like this one, for some reason it recaps the entire movie to fade into a dream sequence, but then it does the thing that the 80's version does, which is be 'ambiguously a dream' but that one leans into 'actually the kid learns he's just imagining things' instead of 'fake dream but it was actually real'

Somehow I think they made this version better for the little boy but worse for all the women characters and that's kind of an impressive level of f*cked-up-edness but

we have made it to the end (?)

Thanks @Taweret for hosting and @cheribaker for the bingo and every single #Monsterdonian for the fun now don't get possessed by martians and I'll look forward to next week!

OK! Another very 80s horror flick in the books for #Monsterdon !
A bit less 80s, a bit more horror than Night of the Comet - but still quite fun!
Apparently, Mars needs not women, but copper. (You'd think that if they can travel to Earth & try to take over, they'd have heard of fiber...)
But anyway, the takeaway here is to be aware of context & schedules; it can be an email, rather than a meeting. It can be a clay tablet, not a movie...

Thanks all, and @Taweret for hosting! Have a great week!

And what is UP with the closing credits. It's like a lovesong symphony. Where's the team that did the opening credits? I guess the cheesy love song is all the denouement we are going to get. #monsterdon
