Carpenter was a guest host/programmer on TCM earlier this summer. Just a few weeks back I think. He looks old, but he's still sharp and will talk movies forever. Some great segments.

Sam Neill is the only guy who can get away with wearing a button down shirt and a blazer and jeans with the top button all buttoned up #monsterdon

Oh hey, they made it to Hobb's End. Their journey is now completed, and they can find Sutter Cane.

All of these are good things that the heroes can look forward to.

Aww, riots at book stores because of stock shortfalls? Something about that feels charming, nostalgic even.

Like, I feel like it could've been MORE about writing, about what happens when a writer gets off the chain and starts spinning nonsensical stuff that really DOES start to affect people. There was space there for like, God as the editor he kills. Iunno, it's a good premise but I don't feel like they really took it where it needed to go.

THANK YOU , GOODNIGHT! 🎸πŸ₯βš‘

Seriously though, thanks as always to the eldritch entity @Taweret for hosting, and to the Monsterdon crew for helping me tape my Sutter Cane book covers back together.

I'm going to sell them to Cthulhu's nostalgic kids someday πŸ™

I do love how people will bemoan that city folk think that milk comes from a grocery store (not a cow). And yet in movies when everyone dies the power stays on because laypeople think that electricity comes from the outlet.

That's that! Thank you, all for your amazing jokes and commentary! And thanks to @Taweret! I didn't make use of @miru's stream, but as always, please give a thought to when you can.

Surprisingly bloodless ending. I was expecting tentacle death. Ah well.

As the brains melt slowly in the distance, we thank John Carpenter for painting everything blue. And as always you have one last thing to do before leaving the theater:

Was IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (1994) the WORST #Monsterdon movie of the year?

Sam Neill's accent really threatening to come out at points here, not that it's buried particularly deep in most of this movie

I don't mind it at all, he's a convincing character and where he's from does not matter in the slightest compared to his insistent denial.

Those dogs do not have the body language of creatures attacking. They look like they're having fun!

the fact that this church has a massive stone edifice and is also in the middle of nowhere, standing separate even from the rest of Hobb's End

is so good.

it is Wrong and you know this intuitively when you watch the movie

Truly remarkable how that "single black crayon" could write on padded walls, a fabric hospital gown, and his face. Must be a magic crayon in both properties and amount of wax.

I ordered a copy of the novelization (the local library does not have a copy, but maybe they will when I'm done with mine), I will report back whenever I get around to reading it.

…if I can.

Siskel and Ebert did criticize the movie for relying on jump scares and they were right to do so

honestly I think even those jump scares would work a lot better as-is if you just removed the cheap orchestral sting

even the Master of Horror misses a beat now and again. it's about the vision, man.

Initial impression? I kinda agree with the reviews that were like "It's got some interesting ideas but it's kinda scattershot and doesn't actually go anywhere."

Like, what if reality were being re-written by a hack writer with the help of extra-dimensional monsters?

...yeah, and? Like, what about it?

And that's a wreck!

Trent wanders a world populated with monsters and shadows, made that way by Sutter Cane and his own frantic flight back to his imagined source of safety, a wriggling worm on the hook of the Old Ones now devouring the world! Nothing and nobody fucks off into the sea but deep beneath R'lyeh something long dead stirs fitfully.

Thank you for organizing, @Taweret !

And thank you for all you've given us, Sam Neill. Love your work. Rest easy.

I don't think they had any idea how to end the movie. That ending was less coherent than the ending of a monty python sketch.
