Okay, so the fancy glass space house also comes with a garden that somehow has deer in it, and the space daughter can use an ultrasonic whistle to summon them. She then uses it to summon a tiger to play with it. So far no one has asked why this house on an alien planet includes a garden with deer and a tiger.

I'm not trying to belittle the fry cook's importance to the crew and its morale, but did he need to come on the away mission? #monsterdon

We get more super nice effects shots where the saucer lands and the crew descends via a stairway, then decide to gawk at the green sky and a dust devil. But the dust devil turns out to be a robot driving a goofy looking minimalist space car. He ambles out to meet them and bows congenially, announcing that he is a robot butler named Robby who has maxed out his duolingo score and will take them to meet the doctor via the silly car.

no environmental suits needed, the sheer amount of hair grease in this room will create a protective bubble around us the second we step out of this ship. #monsterdon

We are introduced to the inside of the flying saucer, which is crewed entirely by white dudes in padded gray costumes. The flying saucer is a cool set, the centerpiece of which is a crystal globe. Their mission is to go to Altair for some reason, and when they arrive they have to step in these force field chambers to shield themselves from the deceleration.

As they arrive we get a cool effect scene where they show the planet eclipsing the sun.

For a captain, he's running around checking stuff a lot. Kirk would just sit there in his big boy chair.

This movie starts with a flying saucer zooming around, and a voiceover explains the history of the world. We land on the moon in the last decade of the 21st century and then later invent a hyperdrive and travel faster than light through deep space. So far we're ahead of schedule on the moon thing, but alas, no hyperdrives.

We then are introduced to our first character, who is a spaceship. She's a flying saucer doing a deep space things, but like... a human flying saucer.

So the Id monster is drawing all the power it needs from the giant machine, which is the inspiration for Babylon 5's great machine, and it is using that power to melt through the super Krell door.

Doctor M realizes that the captain is right that the Id monster is caused by him, and the captain draws his phaser. Doctor M asks the captain to kill him, because the Id monster (his evil alter-ego is at the door), but the captain doesn't shoot him.

Hah, "Lost" definitely stole the bit about seeing an enormous monster approaching by the trees it knocks over during its approach.

MONSTER STOMP

Yikes, this invisible monster thingy is racking up quite the body count in this sequence. 😬

These perimeter defence guns, despite being crewed, definitely make me think they inspired the sentry guns in Aliens.

...a-a-a-and there is the ominous "something is approaching" alert. And the gun batteries are on auto! Yep, definitely inspired the sentry gun sequence. It's so cool seeing all the familiar things this movie inspired!!

Both the captain and the doctor have implausibly high IQs (like 160 and 180), maybe everyone is a super genius in the future or has read a lot of the magic D&D tomes that make you smarter when you read them.

Anyway, the doctor won't let the captain use blender because he's too dumb and it might explode his brain, the doctor explaining that having his brain exploded was how the captain of his spaceship died, but he was slightly smarter so he survived.

This Krell library device here in the laboratory is absolutely a microfiche reader! Love it.

Doctor M takes the astronauts on a further tour of Krell artifacts, showing them their impenetrable armor door and also an alien laboratory which contains a table screen that reveals all of the Krell's knowledge. The doctor explains that he's translated some of it and used the knowledge to make the robot.

Also, we don't have a picture of the Krell but I guess they can fit through the doors and I guess they had big heads.

Being accused of crimes triggers the Doctor's exposition mode, and he explains the Cursed Backstory of this planet! It used to have aliens called the Krell, and they visited earth and borrowed some of our tigers and monkeys and other animals. But for some reason they vanished 200 centuries ago, and even their cities have vanished, but they left a nice EP of some electronic noises which the doctor plays with his salt shaker jukebox.
