This movie is like walk through adolescence

1. Being unexplainably super horny

2. A fascination with space

3. Girls figuring out they may not enjoy kissing boys

4. Shady father figures

5. Cryptids

Well, I feel like every single man in that film was quite enough monster on a conscious level without needing to bring the subconscious into it at all. But it was a very cool concept, and Robby is the best!

Looking forward to reading up on the making of because some of those effects were fabulous. But now it's going on for 4am so the rabbithole will just have to wait.

Cheers for the company, everyone! #Monsterdon

I’m glad finally got me to watch Forbidden Planet. It would have been so much better without the shoehorned-in love story and the sexism and the β€œcomic relief” drinking, but it appears to be one of the great granddaddies of all sci-fi.

So I wasn't able to join monsterdon tonight.

But I just want to share a fun memory. 😎

Not sure how old I was, maybe 18? But I saw Forbidden Planet at a cool indy theater that played classic films! Which was an awesome way to see it! 😁

πŸ¦–#MONSTERDON Goodbye!

Thank you @Taweret for hosting this Exceptional Exercise on Sci-Fi Filmmaking! Someday I will have the words to adequately explain how much this event means to me.

and thanks @Cherizilla for the Bingo card! My card had "sharply parted hair", and I could hardly focus on the movie after reading it.

And THANKS to the Real Time Film Analysis Squad: Superb tootstream! I'm afraid we may find the next movie to be much lower quality in comparison to this one. If we're lucky.

What they aren't showing you is the sad EPILOGUE.

Captain guy continues his misogyny thinking he has a little wifey, and is surprised when he finds Alta in the doctor's bed.

He yells at her in a threatening manner. ROBBIE protects her, and they have a stand off.
The men are on the captain's side wanting to turn off Robbie. Scientist's kid, Alta, reprograms the robot to avoid dad's programming. It kills all but the cook, and the three of them travel the universe together.

wow, a coherent movie, with a short but mostly satisfying closing, amazing effects, and like, a competent cast. and a confirmed agender/nonbinary robot. i'm gonna have to go help an old lady across the street or something, this was too good for me. #monsterdon

I’ve seen this one several times. But this was the best viewing. It makes a difference to have seen several decades of science fiction in between to re-recontextualize it, I guess. Thanks for making this choice, #Monsterdon folks!

This concludes my thread for , a movie that I liked but thought was more interesting than good, if that makes sense?

It makes me want to watch sfdebris' review of this movie again... I think he had a good argument that its plot was kind of a religious warning against technology, which is a notable take.

Remember to oil your robots I guess?

#monsterdon This also illustrates why Leslie Neilson is so good at comedy.

He can deliver absolutely absurd lines just like he's playing a serious role, because he's good at serious roles.

The fact that "Slugs" and "Snowbeast" were released several decades after #ForbiddenPlanet suggests to me that human civilisation was almost wiped out in the late fifties and we had to re-learn cinema from scratch.

"A thing like this is too big to evaluate"

You know your one lightweight friend who has a single drink and then everything sounds slightly dirty and hilarious? This movie was made for them

Also yes I am that one friend

I know its supposed to be amazing that she can have emeralds made just to wear on a tuesday but it looks like costume kids jewelry which kinda undercuts that idea

@moira @blogdiva tech bros are more like the cook, getting the science lab robots to throw them a gadget every now and then.

It's very interesting seeing all the ways this influenced other science fiction movies and series... like you see a bit of Star Trek in the military setup of the spaceship, a bit of the death star and the great machine of Epsilon III in the Krell machine sets, and of course you get the robot that was reused in Lost and Space.

So many unanswered questions…

Why didn’t the astronauts pack additional clothes?

Why did the robot have more personality than half of the crew?

Did Robbie ever get that lube job?

πŸ™Š FORBIDDEN TRIVIA πŸͺ

TCM's Ben Mankiewicz has stated that this film's success made future big-budget sci-fi films possible. Preview audiences loved it so much, filmmakers took the preview version into distribution. (That left some rough quick edits at the end that you'll notice.)

Crowds piled into theaters. Still, the studio barely made any profit because the production was so expensive.

Really good, though marred by things that were normal in the 1950s. The sets and props were excellent. 1950s futurism is the best futurism
