You've just speared Dracula and you just walk out of the room? No, I think not, you behead him, burn him and scatter the ashes. Right? Even if you didn't know what to do because you weren't up on vampire lore, wouldn't you just do that because this guy has sure been a royal class prick?
I wouldn't say that this was the best Dracula movie we've seen, but being with you made it a lot of fun.
Viewers of a certain age are going to constantly expect Palance to say "Believe it, or not!" throughout this film.
@ottaross This is one of the movie's underexplained things that it's pulling from the book. There, Dracula self-describes as a SzΓ©kely (a group of ethnic Hungarians living in Romania), and that they descended from a group of Huns. This is in line with the stories that the SzΓ©kelys have, though the historical accuracy of these are unclear.
Aha, I see wikipedia mentions "Transylvania became part of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1002."
Romania emerged in 1866 breaking off from the Ottoman empire shortly after.
Accidentally learning things during #monsterdon over here.
These guys are 0 for 2 on keeping our heroine from getting nabbed out of her bedroom.
Guessing this is not going on Luke Skywalker's resume.
#Monsterdon Vampires can also be repelled by the Star of David, a long CVS receipt, and even basically closing the stupid windows and maybe locking a door or two.
@moira @davesdogmaggie saving grace was watching it with #Monsterdon π§π»

@allanb the painting was the breakout star of the piece #monsterdon
misheard that as "would it be possible to arrange a Cabbage?"
Shaggy Luke Skywalker is going through a lot of costume changes in this flick. And his hair stylist is working overtime. "I said more feathering dammit!"
Ms Higgins, I believe this is covered under "other duties, as required" in your contract.
#monsterdon
Every time I see those big old country houses I wonder what unspeakable things were done to people around the world to pay for it.
He's must be wearing Axe body spray. The women can't resist him. #Monsterdon
Loving the 19th century photos of people posing for pictures with their 1970s hair-dos.
The Englishman's constant rage at everything being foreign is spot on
Well that's #Monsterdon for another week.
Seemed like lots of ad breaks in the Tubi feed this week, knocking the sync out a bit, but it gives you more time for typing, so not a big loss.
Well, we'll just leave this vampire staked to the table I guess. Lunch?
This is how Doctors talk to women still, amirite Ladies?!
@Taweret@octodon.social Quincey is out on the town having the time of his life with Renfield and Dr. Seward, just out of frame.
Our heroine has come on screen for a few shots, but none of them conscious yet. Doesn't bode well for the Bechdel test
This new characters in this scene appear to have been originally cast as Magnum PI and Luke Skywalker.
I swear, this movie has multiple scenes that are "thing that happened in the book" minus explanation. (the 'servants' moving the coffins, how Dracula avoids getting shovelled, etc)
@LingLass I could have used some sexy triplets of evil (brides) or at least a Mina and Lucy worth crossing an ocean at the sight of a photo. Also, did anyone else think that Van Helsing reminded them a bit too much of Captain Stottlemeyer from Monk?
Live long enough and you see the same people looking out at you from behind different eyes.
They're both like "Yeah, that guy's done. Lets go get some tea. No need to chop the head off or any of that other superstitious nonsense."
This Dracula movie had some good things going for it - it looked like it was actually going to make sense and had a well explained timeline and a plot and everything, and then... stuff happened for the last 45 minutes, idk
anyway
Thanks @Taweret for hosting and everyone for posting!
WOW. Worst. Drac. Death Scene. EVER π€¦π»ββοΈπ€¦π»ββοΈπ€¦π»ββοΈ #Monsterdon π§π» #Dracula1974
Can't help thinking they paid Jack partly in sex scenes here
Wow a total Leroy Jenkins style Dracula
#Monsterdon Other neat vampire lore, the vampirism causes all the internal organs to merge, one uniform organ, except for the heart. Thatβs why staking them there kills them. Anywhere else has regenerative capacities, but not the heart.
That lady is clearly the least helpful person to have around during a dog attack.
This woman is like "Yes, wolf attacks, that's a man's job. I'll just faint on this couch over here."
For those that didn't know, shooting at night on old types of film was really difficult and so night shots were often done during the day and various techniques were used to give it a night-time feel, to not very accurate effect.
#Monsterdon Oops, consent has fled. Someone find consent. Bring it back!

Carfax? Are they referring to a property, or are they applying for a car loan?
Turned out to be a pretty strong Van Helsing. And a mostly coherent plot.
Palance had a Lugosi-like still face, but not much acting power. Harker wasnβt bad, but had a much smaller role this time. Some good atmospheric sets.
A totally insipid Luke Skywalker/Tigerbeat guy. And some sadly forgettable 70s women. All in all, a great #Monsterdon event!
@Taweret@octodon.social great fun, see everyone next week! #monsterdon
@SesameSquirrel not even smoke....no goo, no worms...nothing! #monsterdon
Casting by Boaty McBoatface. #monsterdon
Well that was a film, which I guess fucked-off into a painting of Palance that was custom-made for the movie, and shown at least 6 times
It's curtains for Dracula! (sorry, couldn't resist)
Dracula-Palance's primary attack move is the Table Flip
@SRLevine @diazona @plaidtron3000 and naturally, the 'penis-bat' otherwise known as... 'the ol' Arnold Palmer'
#monsterdon
@diazona @plaidtron3000 don't get me started on the whole mass difference thing between Man and Bat....
Hmm, a shaggy Luke Skywalker, and now this blonde lady has a bit of a messy Princess Leia hairdo too. Dracula in the black cape - I'm getting a theme here.
@allanb this Renfield erasure troubles me #monsterdon
Dammit Renfield you are the gauge of Dracula film quality - where are you?
Is this a loophole in the "Vampires must be invited in" thing, as they're in a hotel?
@jonny @combatwombat All the doggos you can pet seems like a nice tradeoff, at least

Magnum PI is on the case! Lady with a bloody neck? Straight to the Nosferatu conclusion.
Direct transfusion is actually pretty much historically accurate to how they would have done it at the time.
Magnum PI and Shaggy Luke wake up from another successful all-night stake out.
High saliva index in this scene. Someone is going to need a towel off here..
Our heroine has got a real pile o' hair going on. A very 1970s country-music singer vibe here.
Shaggy Luke Skywalker tries to read a book, but it knocks him out. More unconscious people.
#Monsterdon I need my Dracula to have impeccable oral health. Jack!Drac, your incessant smoking has stained your choppers. Tsk.
Shaggy Luke Skywalker and Magnum PI are now in the smoking room.
Despite wealth and all the layers of clothing, everyone still look drab
@jonny a true Englishman would be thinking something sexual might be going on if he's lucky, this man harker is a coward
#Monsterdon π§π» #Dracula1974
It MUST be true love if Drac is mesmerized by Lucy Westenra with THAT hairdo
There goes the zoom again....gotta say.....this director is not impressing me....
Yes, I've decided on the Carfax property...but I'm going to need you to stay for a month anyways.
Harker: βSir? Sir?β
Palance: βShhh! Iβm acting here!β #monsterdon
Real estate agents of yesteryear, all sitting back going, "Oh man - this guy, am I rite?"
"I'm starting to feel like the AirBnB recommendation for this place was a little astroturffed."
@liferstate In principle, this could actually work well! A german accent, a romanian, a hungarian, a romani...
Jack Palance thundering around the castle like a man looking for his car keys and has to be somewhere
noooo my empire of diiirt #monsterdon
I love Monsterdon and I have yet to watch one of the movies with everyone. I just love the livetooting. πΈπ€
like Kinski could set you on edge just by looking at you
Palance can only make you want to offer him a Tums
Itβs been interesting to see all these different takes on the same story. What is the Countβs motivation? Is it Mina heβs after, or Lucy, or both? Is Harker a major character throughout, or does he even make it out of Transylvania? The bones of the story stay the same, but the meat is seasoned differently each time.
In any case, as much fun as #Dractober has been, Iβm approaching saturation. I look forward to seeing what next week has in store, but after that Iβll be happy to put Count & co. behind me.
#monsterdon
it was weird to go from Kinski as one of the most menacing draculas to Palance, probably the least menacing dracula ever
Huh. From Wiki:
"The initial CBS-TV broadcast in October 1973 was pre-empted for an address by Richard Nixon on the resignation of Spiro Agnew. "
I guess that was the most accurate to the book Dracula so far. Sorta? But not really.
I am fine without Renfield, he's usually the most sidetracking dead end of every version.
Adding in the looking for the reincarnation of his long dead wife is new and many after this took that idea.
Tying him to Vlad Tepes isn't new but more explicit here I guess.
Jack Palance is just a really weird choice as Dracula.
#Monsterdon #Dracula1974
