You've just speared Dracula and you just walk out of the room? No, I think not, you behead him, burn him and scatter the ashes. Right? Even if you didn't know what to do because you weren't up on vampire lore, wouldn't you just do that because this guy has sure been a royal class prick?

Viewers of a certain age are going to constantly expect Palance to say "Believe it, or not!" throughout this film.

Aha, I see wikipedia mentions "Transylvania became part of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1002."

Romania emerged in 1866 breaking off from the Ottoman empire shortly after.

Accidentally learning things during over here.

These guys are 0 for 2 on keeping our heroine from getting nabbed out of her bedroom.

Guessing this is not going on Luke Skywalker's resume.

Vampires can also be repelled by the Star of David, a long CVS receipt, and even basically closing the stupid windows and maybe locking a door or two.

Shaggy Luke Skywalker is going through a lot of costume changes in this flick. And his hair stylist is working overtime. "I said more feathering dammit!"

Well that's for another week.

Seemed like lots of ad breaks in the Tubi feed this week, knocking the sync out a bit, but it gives you more time for typing, so not a big loss.

@Taweret@octodon.social Quincey is out on the town having the time of his life with Renfield and Dr. Seward, just out of frame.

Our heroine has come on screen for a few shots, but none of them conscious yet. Doesn't bode well for the Bechdel test

This new characters in this scene appear to have been originally cast as Magnum PI and Luke Skywalker.

@LingLass I could have used some sexy triplets of evil (brides) or at least a Mina and Lucy worth crossing an ocean at the sight of a photo. Also, did anyone else think that Van Helsing reminded them a bit too much of Captain Stottlemeyer from Monk?

Live long enough and you see the same people looking out at you from behind different eyes.

This Dracula movie had some good things going for it - it looked like it was actually going to make sense and had a well explained timeline and a plot and everything, and then... stuff happened for the last 45 minutes, idk

anyway

Thanks @Taweret for hosting and everyone for posting!

Other neat vampire lore, the vampirism causes all the internal organs to merge, one uniform organ, except for the heart. That’s why staking them there kills them. Anywhere else has regenerative capacities, but not the heart.

Turned out to be a pretty strong Van Helsing. And a mostly coherent plot.
Palance had a Lugosi-like still face, but not much acting power. Harker wasn’t bad, but had a much smaller role this time. Some good atmospheric sets.
A totally insipid Luke Skywalker/Tigerbeat guy. And some sadly forgettable 70s women. All in all, a great #Monsterdon event!

Well that was a film, which I guess fucked-off into a painting of Palance that was custom-made for the movie, and shown at least 6 times

Hmm, a shaggy Luke Skywalker, and now this blonde lady has a bit of a messy Princess Leia hairdo too. Dracula in the black cape - I'm getting a theme here.

Dammit Renfield you are the gauge of Dracula film quality - where are you?

I need my Dracula to have impeccable oral health. Jack!Drac, your incessant smoking has stained your choppers. Tsk.

And there we have it. Not the worst Drac flick I’ve seen, but far from the best. Some interesting creative choices. I especially liked that this one had Dracula associated with wolves far more than bats, which somehow seems more appropriate to Jack Palance.

It’s been interesting to see all these different takes on the same story. What is the Count’s motivation? Is it Mina he’s after, or Lucy, or both? Is Harker a major character throughout, or does he even make it out of Transylvania? The bones of the story stay the same, but the meat is seasoned differently each time.

In any case, as much fun as #Dractober has been, I’m approaching saturation. I look forward to seeing what next week has in store, but after that I’ll be happy to put Count & co. behind me.

I guess that was the most accurate to the book Dracula so far. Sorta? But not really.
I am fine without Renfield, he's usually the most sidetracking dead end of every version.
Adding in the looking for the reincarnation of his long dead wife is new and many after this took that idea.
Tying him to Vlad Tepes isn't new but more explicit here I guess.
Jack Palance is just a really weird choice as Dracula.

funny, but the cross only works when wielded? Hmmm.
