you know theres a reason why on modern Dr who the daleks get very little dialogue. like they'll start to explain their plan and the Dr will jump in and explain it for them

there's a reason why

#monsterdon Well, I enjoyed that. It was good fun.

I am a little disappointed though. I've heard many times that this film was "Completely different" than Doctor Who. ... but really, this was a remake of the second episode of the TV show.

So, not completely different at all, almost shot-for-shot identical.

so a godlike grandpa scientist blunder into a random time and space, militarize its inhabitants and precipitate a stable truce into open warfare, there are no characters, not even the doctor is a character, and the most peril actually experienced is how one of the guys got stuck in like a one meter wide ravine #monsterdon

Y’all, I just have to note that this is our first movie in ages and ages to NOT feature rampant misogyny in the first five minutes

We don’t have a Bechdel pass yet, but I have hope?

I’m calling that β€œhomeopathic Doctor Who.” It was a movie made from the memories of great Doctor Who episodes, but they didn’t remember them very well.

As always, thanks to @Taweret for hosting, @cherizilla for #MonsterdonBingo, @JoeWynne for #MonsterdonDrink and #MonsterdonTrivia, @ryan for #MonsterdonStream, @paco for #MonsterdonData at gallery.don.monster, and all of you for making it awesome!

the reason why the "goodbye" scene is so hollow is that not only did they not characterize any of the twink colony, they didn't even characterize any of the leads to give a hint as to why they would give a shit about any of this #monsterdon

the city of cute twinks that are also floating glowing rocks has let their diplomatic knowledge lapse in their pastoral forest existence, so now they are totally credulous to the most basic machinations of the mutant robot mech race that they used to live alongside in a state of constant conflict #monsterdon

This was my first exposure to Dr Who, fwiw....

And the movie fucks off into… a new canon for Doctor Who where The Doctor is named Dr. Who, I guess?

It was uneven, but it had its moments. Most of them were in the first 70% of the movie, the last act *really* drags its feet and doesn't stick the landing on much of anything.

But it *does* have Peter Cushing, so there's that

Doctor Who used as a direct form of address? β€œThis is TARDIS” with no article? I’m already experiencing near-fatal levels of pedantry! #Monsterdon

this is a decent example of the difference between a bad bad movie and a good bad movie for me - they made so many nice little opportunities in the world for weird and cool stuff to happen and took absolutely none of them. every moment of heightened tension where they could have leaned into the whole thing they had set up is just resolved by sort of fumbling around and eventually finding the magical next scene button. show me daleks doing jumps off ramps and trying to go offroad in their home planet and failing miserably. show me anything about the pacificist society at all. make the godlike magical family do anything godlike and magical. good bad movies are good because they try so much and fail so spectacularly, bad bad movies don't try anything #monsterdon

elevators make sense in a society where people of all different shapes and sizes and modes of movement and carrying different things and moving in groups and so on. if your society was based around mechs where everyone was exactly the same size and shape and inside a mech suit you would just do like... hooks. or a forklift. and you would build your mechs so that there was a way for them to easily dock in a container for rapid movement.

anyway the conception of the dalek society is lazy and underdeveloped #monsterdon

Anyway this concludes my thread for Doctor Who and the Daleks.

Until next time... um... uh... um... try to not break your time machine if you have one I guess. I think that's the moral.

they make the daleks these totally impotent comical enemies and then do nothing with that. like it's funny how much they suck and the humans have absolutely no problem handling them, but they still run and hide and pretend like they're about to die #monsterdon

So in the normal Doctor Who continuity, the Tardis is like an ancient invention of space people called time lords and the Doctor is a time lord. Or maybe a human. Or maybe a cosmic being. Whatever it doesn't matter.

But anyway, Peter Cushing in this seems like just a normal human and not a space dude or a cosmic being, and the Tardis is just a thing he made. As it looks like a Police Box I wonder if he is breaking any laws doing this.

I give Doctor Who and the Daleks 3 out of 5. It made no sense, but it was also very weird, and those two things seem to cancel each other out. I liked the exploration bits more than the actual plot bits.

This was kind of the "1998 Godzilla movie" of "Doctor Who" in that it's a self-contained spinoff that is mostly worse than the original.
