I don't think it was ever fully clarified whether that actually was a piece of the spaceship, though? But if it wasn't, then it would have had absolutely zero relevance to the rest of the movie, which I suppose would be... unlikely.

They both recognize that the ship is going to explode at the same time and look away from the chess set for a few seconds to watch it go boom. The explosion is mildly interesting, so they pause their game to watch the roil of lights in the sky, before resuming. Edward is distracted by all the meaningless kissing going inside the inn and Alice ends up checkmating Edward, leading to a win for her in daily game #1,153. She's three games ahead and feeling smug.

They see the saucer land and Edward is amazed and excited for once and they sit down a long way's offer to watch what develops via the lens of their respective gift. Nothing does, so they get out their pocket chess board and stare at it for a very long time.

@squared99 yes. Each Sunday night, around an hour before, look for the #Monsterdon announcement of the movie. Find it on a streaming app. Queue it up and start the movie at exactly 9PM EST U.S. I use YouTube but a lot of folks prefer Tubi. Does this help? The comments are often hilarious and are all under the hashtag so you can see them streaming in real time. I watch the movie on my tablet and do my commenting on my phone.

I think the real problem with this movie is that they seem to have confused nuclear reactors as a power source for nuclear bombs. A reactor pile would be fine if you punch it, you wouldn't be, but the reactor should still work. A bomb on the other hand requires incredible precision in both the location of the fissile material(s) and the placement & timing of the detonators can end up as a metaphorical damp squib if jostled too much (you get a "dirty bomb" with a not very powerful explosion).
