"A town of 150 doesn't disappear” - may we forecast a surprise to you, it's name is Dow Chemical. There will be more. Towns of 150? Wait until they start fracking! TOWNS... 150... HA HA HA.

racking my brain trying to think of what bits of the score to THE BEGINNING OF THE END remind me of. some classic song that has a prelude that has a recurring triplet-two half(?) notes-triplet leader, and then the horns come in real aggressive

unfortunately, humming it into soundhound was of no use (of course)

anyway, I feel like some of the more dramatic scenes were just taking that song wholesale with only minor tweaks

That's right, you get sanctuary, and I get a houseboy. Now, do you scream or shriek?

You learn something with every Monsterdon.

Who knew that entomologists had automatic weapons at their fingertips all the time. Whenever he needed it - rat-tat-tat!

And as the grasshoppers molder slowly in the lake, we say thank you to Bert "Grasshopper Murderer" Gordan.

As usual, there's just one last thing to do before you leave the theater.

Was BEGINNING OF THE END (1957) the WORST #Monsterdon movie of the year?

While the bug scientist is using the science theremin to produce a grasshopper call, the lead general decides that his science is taking too long and so he's going to nuke Chicago anyway. Somehow it was evacuated.

The bug scientist refuses to leave because he's almost at a breakthrough blah blah technobabble blah blah science. The reporter stays too because she thinks the bug scientist is cute when he does his bug science.

Grasshopper will only react to the OG Star Trek theme.

We discovered that if you throw a smoke grenade at a giant locust you can easily capture it and relocate it to a giant cage. Unfortunately, there was no scene where a whole bunch of army dudes were dragging the giant grasshopper into the cage.

Anyway, the bug scientist has hooked the giant prisoner up to a lie detector so we can test if the fake locust mating call we're making makes the real locust hot and bothered.

A billion dollars worth of damage. They used to use that almost as a joke. Like it wasn't possible. Now it's Thursday.

This movie could’ve used a little video of giant locusts overrunning Paxton and the Illinois National Guard. β€œShow don’t tell,” doesn’t apply to a Bert I. Gordon budget.

We've decided the Locusts are coming to attack Chicago for some reason, so all the characters go there. The general starts planning a defense. The bug scientist preaches doom.

We see some Sherman tanks driving around, presumably taking up a defense position. A news guy tells us that the locusts always scream before they attack. Then we start hearing giant locust screams everywhere.

Then the locusts will climax, leaving the countryside slick and filthy with bug juice.
