Beginning of the End

I give The Beginning of the End 4 out of 5 giant radioactive locusts. It was surprisingly watchable. Also, yay Chicago.

The best character was the stock footage battle sequences with giant bugs chattering at tanks and somehow defeating them. The worst character was the giant inedible tomato.

Man, loud music and a boat are going to save the world. Who knew that all those disco pontoon parties we had over the years were keeping America safe from giant ravenous grasshoppers?

We see some bugs crawling on a photograph of what I think is tribune tower, then the bug scientist and soldiers shoot them with small arms and they fall off.

It seems like guns in this movie get more powerful the closer they are to Chicago. Inside the loop, a tommy gun will easily kill a giant Locust. Outside the city limits, even tank cannons will not harm them.

The grasshoppers are scissoring! I repeat! We have scissoring!

Suddenly I have a thought, why not just attack them with a push-style lawnmower like in Dead Alive? Just scream β€œI kick ass for the lord!" and just dive into the mess with the mower and a scream?

I love how absolutely blasΓ© they all are over flying a nuclear weapon to Chicago. Nobody cares about Chicago. They aren't upset, they aren't wrestling with the consequences. They're just gonna... take out the trash.

We've invited the grasshopper over for some banana-mayonnaise salad and some corned beef in aspic. When he turns to take his coat off, you grab him

The best thing about compositing gunfire with close-up crickets is that you can't actually show the crickets getting hit, this is great

"Could be the complete annihilation of man!"

"Annihilation?"

"Yes, it's where everyone gets wiped out."

"I knew that, I was just saying it for emphasis"

"Oh, I thought you needed a definition."

"I don't think so, I'm a reporter"

"So you keep saying."

Was that actual ASL? And if so has the "dialect" changed since then? Does he have old ASL accent?

(I have virtually no ASL knowledge, he could have been making any gesture as far as I know.)

The situation must have escalated off screen because we saw a cop screaming into his car phone "OMG the whole town has been destroyed!" and in the next scene the army is setting up a road block and a Pretty 50s Girl (TM) is driving up to it.

We learn she is a reporter and, like the audience, wants to see whatever is going on in this movie but the army corporal running the roadblock won't let her through. She drives away and sneaks in.

Apparently Bert did make a couple movies later in his career that didn't include forced-perspective critters. I almost wanna watch one, just to see how it is. #Monsterdon
