Somehow they managed to make crashing onto Mars, fighting alien snakes, and discovering an ancient alien civilization seem really really boring. Thereβs only about 15 minutes of salvageable movie here. The rest is just astronauts rambling around without any sense of urgency.

Soviet space crews used to carry guns.
The Soviet navy was a shitshow compared to the US navy, so to make sure US ships didn't get to their returning craft first, Soviet capsules landed not at sea but on land, remote areas of its own land... with wolves, bears etc. Hence the guns.
