Another #Monsterdon is in the can!

Thanks to @Taweret for hosting!

Tonight's feature, #TheRaven , from 1963, was another Roger Corman film. Ties to the Edgar Allen Poe piece were superficial at best, with Richard Matheson (the screenplay writer) choosing to take a comedic view to the project. The film was shot in only fifteen days, and contained a large amount of ad-libbed lines, mostly from Peter Lorre. Highlights included:

Vincent Price!Talking raven!Magic potion stew!Diabolical Mind Control!Raspberry Jam!Precious Viper!Finger Manipulation Battle!

My HVAC people offered the giant gargoyle firepit option for my house when I needed my furnace replaced, but it turns out I'd need to get an easement from the City of Minneapolis to for evil lairs and wizardry, and I just didn't want to show up for the council meeting to get it approved.

WELP they all fucked off into the countryside and I'm gonna go get some pizza before the place closes.

These sorcerers reminded me a lot of the petty wizards in Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light and I wonder if that was intentional. People writing cartoons back then loved weird movies.

Goodnight #monsterdon, tip your host @Taweret and see y'all next week!

So many #Monsterdon reactions made me keenly aware that a lot of people didn't know how influential this movie was on comic books and other movies and animation.

I was reading a Dr. Strange comic when #TheRaven came on a Saturday morning Creature Feature and it blew my mind. I looked at Vincent Price and thought, hey, that's Dr. Strange! It wasn't, but I could see how it *could* be. I loved it. Still do. It's not a great movie or even a good movie, but it's a *fun* movie!

Oh, by the way, the producer James A. Nicholson (one of the founders of AIP) has no relation to young Jack in this film.

Thanks for the distraction from waves hands at everything both personal & not fellow vertebrates of monsterdon. It was a much needed source of vaguely amused smiles this evening.

so like in the story universe of the raven, it's not actually about being haunted by the memory of your wife and the ineffability of communication with the beyond, but it's that you were being cucked by a more powerful wizard, and "nevermore" was just about getting that dang raven to shut up because he's an annoying failure #monsterdon

YO! I'm watching this movie again with the sound off and AC/DC's "Back in Black" full album playing, and it's 100% better!!

Absolutely the best thing I've ever done on "social media" was join the movie tonight. Thank you for sanity-restoring break from my doom scrolling!!!

Fun as always! Big thanks to @Taweret, Hazel Court's hoisted cleavage, and corvidae in general.

I'm just thankful the raven didn't rap.

Will I recover ever from this monstrous movie I just saw?

@Taweret I think it's pretty much official in anything that wizard duel rules are "cast spells at each other and try to counter until one is dead"?

They're uh, being a bit sillier about it than normal though.

this may have been an episode in Adam Savage’s channel but can’t remember where i saw a whole thing about Boris Karloff’s make up box.

even though Jack Pierce did his monster makeup, he had a box dedicated to his makeup and prosthetics. the episode i saw showed the box and it still had his fake teeth, hair and pancake makeup.

this is the box.

πŸ‘€ Voluptuous Hazel Court said in an interview years after making The Raven that it irritated her when the film came out and critics focused on her breasts more than her acting.

Too sensitive? Here's one review from Time magazine:
"The sexy, lusty redhead is played by the English actress Miss Hazel Court, in whose cleavage you can sink the entire works of Edgar Allan Poe plus a bottle of his favorite booze."

Putting and end to Peter Lorre’s performance by turning him into jam is the best thing to happen in the movie so far. Scarabus did nothing wrong. #Monsterdon

@TerryHancock Also Nicholson was just a young actor that Corman had worked with before. He also has a small part in the original Little Shop of Horrors. A lot of actors and directors got their start working for Corman. #Monsterdon

@TerryHancock i agree. i like this film quite a bit. it's Corman so i don't think it's fair to expect a huge amount from plot and pacing. Whole thing was filmed in 15 days. it's pretty damn good for what it is. I love the arthritis-friendly duel where Price is really trying so hard to sell it with his facial expressions and gestures. #Monsterdon

@catzilla She bluntly said it was someone else's body in the coffin (dead bodies are surprisingly easy to come by in this film). And that she had left Craven for Scarabus because of his money and power. So, yes, it was Lenore.

I think if I were tasked with converting The Raven to a workable film script, (And the studio wouldn't let me shoot it absolutely straight as a very slow art piece) My first thought would be to make the incident in the poem one of several escalating incidents.

His family tries to help him, but every time he's left alone he broods over Lenore and starts ranting at a bird that might or might not be real.

deep into VRchat peering, long i sat there scribbling, leering
pouting, screaming at a bird whose failson's at my daughters door
but the silence keep being broken, by the jam the rugs were soaked in
and the loudest words then spoken were the cackle of my cucked lenore,
then i whimpered, and she murmured back the words "a bore"
merely this, and what a chore

They say corvid's can remember individual people, so I'm assuming that particular raven didn't let his agent book him on another Roger Corman picture for the rest of his career.
