Oh, Lenore is Ellen from Devil Girl from Mars #monsterdon
This is an old one but:
We have arrived at Castle Trapezoid.
Another #Monsterdon is in the can!
Thanks to @Taweret for hosting!
Tonight's feature, #TheRaven , from 1963, was another Roger Corman film. Ties to the Edgar Allen Poe piece were superficial at best, with Richard Matheson (the screenplay writer) choosing to take a comedic view to the project. The film was shot in only fifteen days, and contained a large amount of ad-libbed lines, mostly from Peter Lorre. Highlights included:
Vincent Price!Talking raven!Magic potion stew!Diabolical Mind Control!Raspberry Jam!Precious Viper!Finger Manipulation Battle!you could've just had Price keep reading Poe to us. that could've been the whole movie
Oh no! You're locked in a bedroom with a foppish hottie. What will you DO?
I am here trying to watch this *very serious* film and Patrick is yelling "magic missile!" at the screen.

The Raven was portrayed by Jim Jr., apparently, and he appeared in more than 125 roles!

Vincent Price tells the story of he and Peter Lorre at Bella Lugosi's funeral (where Lugosi was in his Dracula cape). Lorre asked, "Do you think we should drive a stake through his heart just in case?"
(That's funnier than this entire film)
My HVAC people offered the giant gargoyle firepit option for my house when I needed my furnace replaced, but it turns out I'd need to get an easement from the City of Minneapolis to for evil lairs and wizardry, and I just didn't want to show up for the council meeting to get it approved.
I wonder how many kids were assigned a report on "The Raven", and decided they didn't need to read it because they'd seen the movie.
WELP they all fucked off into the countryside and I'm gonna go get some pizza before the place closes.
These sorcerers reminded me a lot of the petty wizards in Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light and I wonder if that was intentional. People writing cartoons back then loved weird movies.
Goodnight #monsterdon, tip your host @Taweret and see y'all next week!
the fight would be more engaging if there were any sort of rules of what they were and were not able to do and if we knew what they were
i can't listen to Karloff without thinking about the Grinch tho
i did not call the raven being a wisecracking wiseguy what in the fuck kind of movie is this #monsterdon
some guys play air guitar, Vincent Price air draws ravens to the groovy tunes of a theremin
I imagine a young David Lynch watching this, strung out on opium.

Take advantage of every opportunity.
Like Roger Corman, who finished filming The Raven in 15 days, earlier than scheduled, so he immediately rolled the same actors and set into filming another movie, The Terror.
"SCARABUS SCARABUS...CAN YOU DO THE FANDANGO?!"
So many #Monsterdon reactions made me keenly aware that a lot of people didn't know how influential this movie was on comic books and other movies and animation.
I was reading a Dr. Strange comic when #TheRaven came on a Saturday morning Creature Feature and it blew my mind. I looked at Vincent Price and thought, hey, that's Dr. Strange! It wasn't, but I could see how it *could* be. I loved it. Still do. It's not a great movie or even a good movie, but it's a *fun* movie!
Oh, by the way, the producer James A. Nicholson (one of the founders of AIP) has no relation to young Jack in this film.
this movie woulda made a great 10-minute comedy sketch at a Renaissance Faire
Veni, Vidi, Vincent
fuck Lex Baxter (music by)
I'm not watching #Monsterdon today, but apparently it has Vincent Price. Is it the one with the cats?
Can someone screencap Price saying "I too have failed at the task of living." I need it for important posting reasons
I mean, yeah. I'd turn him into a bird too.
βHe turned me into a raven!β
βA raven?β
"β¦I got better.β #Monsterdon
Dear Abby. Mom's been dead for two years and my Dad lurks around the manse reciting angsty poetry like a teenager. How do I tell him I'm not coming home for Thanksgiving?
Thanks for the distraction from waves hands at everything both personal & not fellow vertebrates of monsterdon. It was a much needed source of vaguely amused smiles this evening.
@saucerlost @Taweret an 80s version would have had a rapping bird.
so like in the story universe of the raven, it's not actually about being haunted by the memory of your wife and the ineffability of communication with the beyond, but it's that you were being cucked by a more powerful wizard, and "nevermore" was just about getting that dang raven to shut up because he's an annoying failure #monsterdon
Quoth the raven, βcheating whore!β
that brocade is polyester and itβs making me sad. Vincent deserved real silk.
#monsterdon The Raven is Jersey Bitchy LOL

Did you know the middle name of the Marvel comic character Dr. Strange is "Vincent"? That's because he was directly inspired by Vincent Price as Dr. Erasmus Craven from tonight's feature.
#The Raven1963
can i just get an entire cd of vincent price reading poetry at me?
YO! I'm watching this movie again with the sound off and AC/DC's "Back in Black" full album playing, and it's 100% better!!
#monsterdon Absolutely the best thing I've ever done on "social media" was join the movie tonight. Thank you for sanity-restoring break from my doom scrolling!!!
Fun as always! Big thanks to @Taweret, Hazel Court's hoisted cleavage, and corvidae in general.
I'm just thankful the raven didn't rap.
At least her boobs are still intact.
#monsterdon
@Taweret I think it's pretty much official in anything that wizard duel rules are "cast spells at each other and try to counter until one is dead"?
They're uh, being a bit sillier about it than normal though.
this may have been an episode in Adam Savageβs channel but canβt remember where i saw a whole thing about Boris Karloffβs make up box.
even though Jack Pierce did his monster makeup, he had a box dedicated to his makeup and prosthetics. the episode i saw showed the box and it still had his fake teeth, hair and pancake makeup.
this is the box.
Man, I was starving. Sweet and sour pork to the rescue. #monsterdon

π Voluptuous Hazel Court said in an interview years after making The Raven that it irritated her when the film came out and critics focused on her breasts more than her acting.
Too sensitive? Here's one review from Time magazine:
"The sexy, lusty redhead is played by the English actress Miss Hazel Court, in whose cleavage you can sink the entire works of Edgar Allan Poe plus a bottle of his favorite booze."
#The Raven1963
Putting and end to Peter Lorreβs performance by turning him into jam is the best thing to happen in the movie so far. Scarabus did nothing wrong. #Monsterdon
everyone is so forgiving of this guy who keeps turning people into birds and jam and stuff #monsterdon
I've seen this before but it didn't strike me until just now how wild it is to see Jack Nicholson, Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff in a movie together #monsterdon
i donβt know why, but am actually digging the half-assed scenery. it does give the movie a certain surreal, dream-like vibe.
fucking hate the music.
so i see that acting like a wild-eyed maniac has been always been Jack Nicholsonβs thing
I think you want to insist on an answer to the question βWhat were you before?β before you agree to help with the transformation. #Monsterdon
[Completely insane thing happens]
Vincent: βWell, upon my soul!β #Monsterdon

π¦ββ¬And to all the members of the Real Time Film Analysis Squad: The monster was Arrogance? Pridefullness? The screenplay? Let me know.
the funniest shit about this movie is columbusing that one-note Jack Nicholson is a fucking nepobaby.
yeah, i donβt think heβs that great an actor but he knows how to emote for a camera.
Erasmus/Price, staring straight down the barrel of the camera: "Quoth the raven: \"Nevermore\"."
THAT IS THE TITLE OF THE MOVIE
*confetti drops from the sky*
*twelve dozen trained marmots gallop in intricate patterns out on the lawn*
*air raid sirens in the distance slowly rev up to speed and perform a full rendition of The Blue Danube*
Turns out the castle was made of that stuffing inside fake Vincent. #Monsterdon
Fingerblast em!
just wizard yourself a gun people's lives are on the line #monsterdon
Raven-themed gifts are always welcomed at my house.
Is this movie some form of hazing? What fraternity am I joining? #monsterdon
That... that is Jack Nicholson. Holy shit #monsterdon
OMG, the amount of mustard Vincent put on βDiabolic mind control.β #Monsterdon
what was the poem even about anyway, isn't it just how ravens are scary and how you miss your wife #monsterdon
A WILD PETER LORRE APPEARS
Vincent Price used "nod and smile at the person who definitely remembers you but whom you do not remember at all"
It is super effective!
the birb sounds like Joe Pesci
Vincent Price is finger-doodling in midair while wearing a paisley curtain..?
this man is a national treasure
@TerryHancock Also Nicholson was just a young actor that Corman had worked with before. He also has a small part in the original Little Shop of Horrors. A lot of actors and directors got their start working for Corman. #Monsterdon
@TerryHancock i agree. i like this film quite a bit. it's Corman so i don't think it's fair to expect a huge amount from plot and pacing. Whole thing was filmed in 15 days. it's pretty damn good for what it is. I love the arthritis-friendly duel where Price is really trying so hard to sell it with his facial expressions and gestures. #Monsterdon
@catzilla She bluntly said it was someone else's body in the coffin (dead bodies are surprisingly easy to come by in this film). And that she had left Craven for Scarabus because of his money and power. So, yes, it was Lenore.
Well, that was harmless silly fun. Thanks for the laughs, #Monsterdon!
I bet the drugs on this set were incredible. #monsterdon
Clearly he learned wax on, wax off from Mr. Miyagi. #Monsterdon
"We need something sexy in this movie."
"There is nothing sexy about this movie."
"We could throw in someone dressed like Robin Hood."
"Perfect."
"Let's add some more video of surf."
"I can surf."
"I think the movie can write itself."
"To the beach!"
"And beyond!"
"Heeere's Johnny, I'll be your Uber driver tonight"
Pew pew.
#monsterdon
loving Vincent's laser finger
First you must slice open the web layer like cellophane. It keeps your ancestors fresh and sassy.
That awkward moment when someone you met at a convention remembers you and you're totally drawing a blank.
WTF the raven talks?!?!?
i don't member any kinda VR painting app in the raven #monsterdon
I think if I were tasked with converting The Raven to a workable film script, (And the studio wouldn't let me shoot it absolutely straight as a very slow art piece) My first thought would be to make the incident in the poem one of several escalating incidents.
His family tries to help him, but every time he's left alone he broods over Lenore and starts ranting at a bird that might or might not be real.
#Monsterdon
Me: βBartender! A round of warm milk for everyone!β
@Louisa
deep into VRchat peering, long i sat there scribbling, leering
pouting, screaming at a bird whose failson's at my daughters door
but the silence keep being broken, by the jam the rugs were soaked in
and the loudest words then spoken were the cackle of my cucked lenore,
then i whimpered, and she murmured back the words "a bore"
merely this, and what a chore
They say corvid's can remember individual people, so I'm assuming that particular raven didn't let his agent book him on another Roger Corman picture for the rest of his career.
@SordidAmok mmmmmmmm
@diazona @saucerlost @Taweret well that ear worm will be keeping me awake tonight.... #Monsterdon
@catzilla I'm just showing off because it's one of the few #monsterdon films where I was paying attention during an important plot point.
Haters gonna hate, but thank you #monsterdon for giving me the excuse to watch this delightful flick I haven't seen in decades. Peace and love.
music by lex baxter. so we know who to blame.
