The Quatermass Xperiment

This #monsterdon was a remake of a BBC teleplay that was broadcast live and never recorded.

I wish we could reach back into the past and watch those old broadcasts.

The BBC also did a live version of H.G. Well's "The Time Machine" that was supposedly really good, but no recording was made, so who knows.

(Aside: I am really enjoying this film. The paranoia and slow burn of the investigation and chase, the growing horror of what Victor is doing and what is happening to him at the same time, the implied back story of what infrastructure and organizations are behind Quatermass to have made the experiment and this ensuing damage control possible at all... it's really doing a good job of showing just enough to fire the imagination. This is great.)

Cut it out with the bunsen burners left lit and unsupervised!! That is terrible practice, not to mention wasteful!

Thank you, @Taweret , that was great! And surprisingly chilling and timely.

Thank you for the bingo card, @cherizilla !

And thank you for another delightful Sunday evening, . Good night, and good luck to us all.

#monsterdon I guess the moral here is don't have the hubris to self-fund your own space agency, name it after yourself, and then launch without regulatory approval.

That's a lesson we can all stand to learn.

So Doc Quatermass ignored rules and approvals, and went ahead with his experimental flight,.

It went horribly wrong, resulting in the deaths of many innocents and the loss of all the astronauts.

So he's the hero who gets to give it another shot on his own terms, and try it all again? Stay tuned!

This movie is very 2026.

And with that, Quatermass fucked off into the night.

That was fun guys. I adore the Quatermass movies. Let's watch another movie next week, what do you say?

Thank you, Monsterdon buds! Take care of each other. Be kind, spread love, watch goofy monster movies.

This was some suspenseful and mournful 50’s monstering! But in my memory, the other Quatermases weren’t so... capitalist? American? Am I misremembering? At any rate, thanks for the film @Taweret, @Cherizilla and @JoeWynne. Stay warm and goo-free, everyone! #Monsterdon

He's gonna start again, and we're the test subjects this time!

Well that was a lot of fun, despite being a low budget 1950s sci-fi film.

Thanks everyone who made this a blast, especially @Taweret for hosting, @JoeWynne for trivia, @cherizilla for trivia, and everyone else for great comments!

This film does have its moments of effectiveness, but it's all tied up in interminable scenes of bland white men talking over each other in blank white rooms. #Monsterdon

I like how old monster movies seem to have a civil emergency button where a scientist can just be like "we got an emergency there's a space monster!" and then the government, army and media are all like "oh shit its a space monster!" and then they all polarize immediately to try and contain the otherworldly threat.

@moira suggested like story line: the soviets send Laika (canine cosmonaut) into space, but with facilities to return her instead of on the historical kamikaze missions. She returns, then bites people and those people she bites turn into werewolves. We'd probably have to have her crash into an English village.

Don't feel bad for the alien. Remember that it killed a bunch of cats.

@ottaross

you forgot the part where he almost killed all of London, and ruined a perfectly good BBC show.
