If you burned a bunch of metal in an oxygen atmosphere (as in earth) you aren't going to get a bunch of things "ready to activate" you've just made a bunch of metal oxides.

I feel like a modern movie would have made her eyes look like they were the same material as the rock and it would maybe have been as creepy? But maybe not, because the total lack of response of the kid is pretty creepy.
