#monsterdon ARGH, CHILD WITH A VIOLIN
THE TRUE HORROR OF THIS FILM IS REVEALED
Herzog released the film ONE DAY after the copyright to Dracula expired so he could call all the characters by their original names.
"Since we left the Caspian sea"
Hang on, that's an inland sea.....how lost are these guys?
Wouldn't people be familiar with the dangers of a plague? ::looks over at 2020:: Oh, I guess not... #Monsterdon #NosferaturTheVampyre
Did Nosferatu just body jack into Harker then ride off into the Sea?
Fucking classic Monsterdon, exactly how you'd expect a "Werner Herzog Monsterdon" to go down!
#monsterdon @k8eb is looking at these mountain shots and cracking jokes about the Von Trapp children, I don't think she appreciates the gravity of this hallmark of filmmaking
#monsterdon What began as "Nosferatu the vamp you're" ended as "Nosferatu the vamp we're"
ow ow stop hitting me
#monsterdon *Lucy wanders soundlessly through a courtyard filled with frantic revellers, living it up instead of distancing themselves from the plague wracking the town*
Hey does anyone remember the early days of COVID lockdowns when people were defiantly going out nightclubbing
Ha ha ha no reason
@allanb she's ridden the new york subway i see #monsterdon
#monsterdon Ten ducats to whomsoever sews linen nightshirt sleeves more dramatic than Lucy's just now
I donβt love it when my boss cackles ominously and weirdly #monsterdon
@Taweret@octodon.social We watched My Best Fiend last night, a Herzog-Kinski weekend!
Everything is hyperreal and humanity are mad cowards!
#monsterdon Aww no! Dracula gets a sunburn and then a thorough ventilation, Lucy bites it (or rather is bitten), van Helsing gets arrested by a reluctant minor city functionary and then dragged off to an unguarded prison, and Harker hops on a horse and fucks off into the desert.
And that's a wreck!
Thank you @Taweret@octodon.social for hosting, that was a fun one: both less and more goofy than I expected. Lots of fun! Excellent Lucy, ...memorable Renfield.
genuine fear at finding Klaus Kinski in your room
#monsterdon "Not a soul on board, but the hull is teeming with rats..."
rat ship rat ship rat ship
"This is extremely sketchy, but as long as the gods of bureaucracy have been appeased--" #monsterdon
#monsterdon I really do want to know who wrangled all these adorable little bats, and how. They're so well behaved! Li'l bat buddies
Terrible violin playing keeps vampires away.
Herzog: When we shot the scene with the kittens the crew felt a wholesome warmth, until Kinski spat at them and called them cowards. It was Tuesday.
#monsterdon Somebody please bring Lucy a steak, a double side order of spinach, and a ferrous fumarate smoothie, stat
#monsterdon "\"The consecrated host bans the vampire\""
*Lucy breaks up a bunch of consecrated bread and surrounds Harker with a semicircle of holy crumbs*
OK but do you want ants
because that it how you get [non-vampiric] ants
love how Kinski-Nosferatu scampers around Dutch London, the imp
#monsterdon These sharp shadow scenes really evoke the 1922 Nosferatu wonderfully well.
#monsterdon Bats and rats and cats better scurry
When I take you out in the surrey
When I take you out in the surrey with the fri-i-inge on top
Apparently the crosses in the church are spookier to the Count than the graveyard full of them he just walked through. #Monsterdon
"Let's bring our children to the mysterious plague ship where they can clearly see a dead man lashed to the wheel. We are good parents"
#monsterdon Is it... normal..? to wear eyeshadow to bed? Isn't it more usual to remove that before zonking out on a snowy white pillowcase?
I dunno man, not my area of expertise.
The host is good at small talk #monsterdon
What is the Sea for if not for staring wistfully into it while a big life decision hangs over you like a Klaus Kinski in the sky?
#Monsterdon Renfield needs to be mugged, tied up, and deloused. Shaved, too. Because of the lice. Heβs just lice in a rumpled suit. Makes me itch with repulsion. Excellent casting.
If this were a video game I would not accept the Renfeld character's quest, way too many red flags
Time to rewatch the original Nosferatu and see how many of the departures from the plot of the Dracula novel (e.g. rats, plague) came from that film.
(I also want to rewatch Possession (1981) because Isabelle Adjani was incredible in that film.)
I ALWAYS miss #Monsterdon and I'm really, really annoyed with myself.
Oh shit is was holding him in!
#monsterdon
#Monsterdon This movie is a buffet for cats.
Dutch London is so fucked only sheep roam it's streets and canals now
Oh wait, a pig!
And an old lady!
#monsterdon Did that pigeon just take off accompanied by the sound effect of a red-tailed hawk!? Bahahahaha
That was some cool dialog. Also, the way the cross was handled makes it seem like Dracula is afraid of observant christians rather than just the symbols
Huh, this movie waited over an hour to do the no reflection thing.
(Also, it once again gave silent movie vibes)
Shit I loove the real scenery and the sound of real horses pulling a real carriage
#Monsterdon Looks like the Demeter has arrived. Without engines. Just sorta floated into a transient dock all by itself. As schooners are often to do. I guess.
Herzog wanted the rats to be grey, but all he had was lab rats, thousands and thousands of lab rats. So, he had the dyed grey, which required immersing them in boiling water. Herzog and Kinski are the true monsters of this film.
No human feet were bitten by rats in the making of this film
#monsterdon Violin Child making Harker wish the fall out of that window had actually ended him
"Lucy my love, there is barely one bar out here so I'll send you a text message and hope for the best"
Well they've captured the essence of a guy who lives completely alone in a giant mansion
#monsterdon
This is on the cusp of breaking out into a Borat film I can feel it
#monsterdon
apparently i *had* seen this before! but i don't think i was paying as much attention the first time, because this felt totally new to me lol. anyway this was fantastic, thanks @Taweret@octodon.social #monsterdon
@paco he's definitely not a policeman, we know that #monsterdon
Congratulations folks, we solved nothing, the plague is still rampaging, no one listened to the woman who knew what was up, and everyone (including real estate agents) has to return to work at the office
Oh uh this is about #monsterdon
#Monsterdon Itβs done. Herzog ran out of gas. Kinski was napping on the floor. Lucy was checked out. And Minaβ¦ Mina was nowhere to be found. Ah well.
Oh no, HIS TEEF. #Monsterdon
#Monsterdon Nobody knows what they are doing. Itβs like the real world, only feeble and dottering.
Court? What court? Didn't everyone fucking die from the plague already? Who are these clowns #monsterdon
oh NOW you know how to kill a vampire. now that the most of the town is dead. thanks, doc
That's a great dead Dracula on the floor
Kinski trained himself to make his eyes go milky, no contacts, just pure acting.
Oh god, the SOUNDS... in this whole film #monsterdon
The is just an excuse for eroticism
#monsterdon
"I mean obviously I need to hold onto your tit for leverage while I bite you......"
This is really Lucyβs movie. Dr. Van Helsing is useless in this.
Although, she does share the screen with the rats a lot. So itβs a rat movie too. #monsterdon
@ricci Herzog 'pied piper'd' them all
#Monsterdon Unusual funerary square dance has broken out. Do see do! Spin your dead neighbor and shake those hips!
#Monsterdon Did he literally suggest letting the situation just get worse for science? Helsing was always zealous, except here, hes dottering.
Wait, the plague killed *how* many people? This is starting to sound like it had >10% TFR
every shot with dracula is somehow both deeply comic and deeply terrifying, like a nightmare about looney toons characters
No lockdown I see, I blame the Dutch for that....
Dutch London fell apart even faster than we did during the plague, huh?
Dead horse, town council disbanded, maybe even the PTA too?
To get Bruno Ganz to look like that they left him on boat in the middle of a lake with Klaus for a few hours
haha GO RENFIELD RUN RUN
His response to that cross was more like "meeeeeh, fine, I'm leaving" than "arrrrgh no". #monsterdon
That guard was pretty shit though, fell for that old ruse...
That is one perfectly squeaky door
#monsterdon
This scene was SO good. So creepy, so scary. #monsterdon
Okay, but the rats really do seem to be willing to go through customs for their trip to the Dutch city standing in for London.
I sincerely doubt the officials in London would have allowed 100-200 rats to be filmed scurrying around the sidewalks
The rats are all politely waiting for customs
#monsterdon *Lucy, lost in worried thought, staring out the window before a cut to a ship at sea*
Inner monologue: "Will the cod come back? Or will I have to move to Toronto?"
@SRLevine Sort of. Doing some checking suggests that they were pretty exotic and unreliable until well into the 19th century. So Dracula not using one in 1897 makes him odd and old-fashioned in a way that feels thematically appropriate.
OK dammit at least this one shows drac climbing around on a ship in the dark
@jonny we've got Holland standing in for England, something's going on..... #Monsterdon
#Monsterdon Renfield needs to be pistol whipped. I think heβd enjoy it. I think weβd all enjoy it. Until there is no more sharp forced laughter coming out of that suit-filled-with-lice.
SqueekSqueekSqueek (also, wait, wouldn't people on a ship really not want to bring on rats, given the choice?)
why would you put your bare foot in the box of rats?
Why doesn't he just take the stairs
#monsterdon
I bet Herzog made Bruno Ganz climb down the side of that castle with no safety or anything, just a lone violin boy
This 'wondering around Dracula's castle' feels a lot like playing a video game which shows how ahead of his time Herzog always is.
Time is an abyss
#monsterdon
Iβm sorry are those the tiniest bats in his window? π€ #monsterdon
Concerned that she might be lonely, the bat just dropped in to keep her company. #monsterdon
@jonny *Flashbacks to youth and shared housing....
That bat is as large as squirrel
#monsterdon
I like how the bats in this movie are real and not pathetically fake like they were in last week's movie.
Klaus stepping over those boundaries again, that is not how you tend to a wound...
