@Crazypedia Yes, that intro voiceover is irreconcilable with our current understanding of dinosaurs. Unless ... the atmosphere was different enough 65 million years ago that the comet rays/infection interacted differently with the dinos and only dusted their flesh, not their bones. Um. Interference from volcanic dust? #Monsterdon #NightOfTheComet

@shig Lesson: Air purification is important! If you go into a bunker to survive the comet that will dust people but forget to turn off the air vents, infected air will get in and you'll turn into zombies too, just less quickly than folks who didn't look directly at the comet but didn't bunker themselves as well. #NightOfTheComet #Monsterdon

@Crazypedia @SavahRellcast Oh huh I've never heard that it's good manners to start a thread. I mean, it's not like you can mute a whole thread (as far as I know); people who don't want to see #Monsterdon posts have to mute the hashtag anyway. Some people do start threads but my understanding has been that's for their own personal organization, not ease of muting.

@moira @starkraving666 @apLundell i actually would like to place DMK as the wizard of oz of the film, he was just trying to get to samantha the whole time and architected all the events to that end. why were the scientists out there? DMK fed them some bad information to generate a sense of crisis after the apocalypse so that he could swoop in afterwards and be comparatively desirable to science cult zombies #Monsterdon

@moira This is what I’m talking about. It has layers to it. The writers did a good job, and the cinematography and directing is good. The editing could be better, and I feel pretty sure they wanted to fit it under a certain time, so they reduced some stuff that might have made it even better. #Monsterdon

@apLundell Well, we don't really know (and I suppose it doesn't matter for plot purposes), but my best guess is that that one was his actual car but after the apocalypse he "adopted" a bunch of other cars whose owners had been turned to dust. That is, when he says "I have 23" he just means 23 cars, not necessarily 23 new convertibles.

Or he doesn't have any other cars but he's just making something up to impress Samantha, and maybe he realizes it'll be easy to find 23 cars he can claim to own.

@shig The scientists mentioned symptoms including drying out, etc. I don’t know if they specifically mentioned rashes, but it didn’t seem to come out of nowhere when they saw her and thought she had been exposed. #Monsterdon

Danny Mason Keener says "I have 23" cars like that brand new convertible he's driving. That implies he just claimed an abandoned car, right? From a dealership?

So why the vanity plate?

@diazona @jonny @moira @simrob I thought they were telling us (via showing and not telling) that the scientists' minds were degrading and that's why they were shifting gears into extra weird useless experiments and treating everything as routine. just like. wheels still turning but they've lost track of so many things they're deeply off the rails and can't tell #monsterdon

@jonny @moira @simrob Ah yes see this is the kind of information that would have really helped this movie seem more coherent if I had seen it explained. (To be fair, I definitely missed some things while paying attention to the #Monsterdon feed but I usually don't miss this many pivotal details)

@moira @diazona @simrob and from what i take it the scientists were slowly realizing that they had been exposed and were collectively agreeing to not talk about it while knowing what they had to do, making it up in real time, which is how they got to harvesting people for blood, which didn't seem to be the original plan. #monsterdon

@fluffy All gussied up in their Sunday best! They made the kid put on a skinny tie!

I realize that I made this point during the last man on earth, but: when the apocalypse comes, I'm putting on my sweat pants, and I'm never tucking in my shirt again, ever.

@simrob I'll agree with the others about the feed being typical (though it's definitely been picking up more in the last month or so? we're clearing well over 1000 posts I think). Movies are *very* variable in quality, though I have to say usually a bit more obvious from the title what you'll be getting yourself into.

okay, still probably would have prefered DMK = gamer lesbian version, but for a dumb 80s flick, this was absolutely made for me, an apocalypse-enamored 80s kid. A+++ #monsterdon

Were there reprehensible things in this movie? Yes

Was I surprised by a competent female protagonist, a sidekick sister who wasn't an airheaded liability, and a Latine man as a love interest and well-rounded person? Also yes

#monsterdon That scene at the end is great because not only do we have whatever that trope is where every new person repeats some annoying bit (bruh you shouldn't cross against the light) but also, looking back from 40 years in the future we were all just clenched up for a second there expecting Kelli Maroney to get absolutely trucked. #NightOfTheComet (1984)
