After demonstrating his house's wacky appearing shutters, which I am sure is a feature that we will never see used through this movie, the Doctor explains his backstory... his spaceship crashed on this planet and some kind of mysterious monster ate (or disappeared?) all the crew, except for him and his wife, a wife that I guess did not appear on the space manifest. Afterward, he made the robot to take care of them.
