By the way, I would advise against petting the spider, on the abdomen at least. (Virtually all) tarantulas from the Americas have urticating hairs on their abdomen, kind of like fibreglass, which they can brush off to defend themselves. Many tarantula keepers have to be extra careful about cleaning out enclosures.
