TRIVIA FROM THE BLACK LAGOON
Herstory
Bud Westmore, head of Universal's makeup department was given credit for The Creature's design, but it was really Milicent Patrick, makeup designer, animator, special effects artist, and actor who deserved the credit.
She was the first woman to work in a special effects makeup department.

like the human characters are boring but at least the monster keeps showing up to attack them
I want a genderswap remake of this. Sexy fish woman trying to make out with the one guy on a boat full of tough action science women.
#Monsterdon #CreatureFromtheBlackLagoon
"anything is worth a try" - scientists poisoning a whole lake
#monsterdon
"Four men dead so far" so we just forgot about all those native guides huh
fucking assholes
looks like everything's coming up gilhouse!
how do they know there's only one monster?

TRIVIA FROM THE BLACK LAGOON
Bud Westmore, jealous of Patrick's potential fame during promotional tours, made changes to prevent her from getting credit for designing the Gill-man and eventually made sure she was fired from Universal.
It wasn't until 1978 that the truth began to be revealed by in the film media. She was alive until 1998 to enjoy the fame.

someone buy them the situational awareness expansion pack they keep losing their dames #monsterdon
I know we're supposed to make fun of this for being a terrible movie, but I have nothing intelligent to say other than practical effects are just better. As silly as all this is, the costume actually looks pretty good even though it was 1954.
I had the time of my life!
Can we have a moment to appreciate the difficulty of swimming on camera in that enormous rubber suit? Huge respect to the monster operator.
movie where all the lady scientists from this, It Came From Beneath The Sea, Them! all form a science polycule away from these men who never listen to them #Monsterdon
we don't know that kay is not bearing a swamp creature, we need a sequel #monsterdon
THE END! I can't remember ever sitting all the way through that one before. That was another of those "Perfect for #Monsterdon" kind of flicks. Cheesy, but with moments of "Hey that was really well done." Thanks as always to @Taweret for hosting. Have a great week Beautiful Mutants. #CreatureFromTheBlackLagoon
The realtor was right. Putting a white woman on a plinth in the bay window really increases the curb appeal.
#Monsterdon "We didn't come here to fight monsters"
Ok, but we are here to watch you fight monsters.
wow, great hunting etiquette. you wounded it and didn't have a plan. #monsterdon
evolutionary pressures to look all scary and be able to fit an oxygen tank on its hump has rendered it extraordinarily non-hydrodynamic so it can't catch earth's beautiful women. this is the swamp creature's greatest challenge #monsterdon
its gonna get racist isn't it
oof, i forgot the ending of the film was so abrupt.
That was a lot of fun though! Thanks to @Taweret @JoeWynne @cherizilla and everyone else who makes #monsterdon great! See you next time!
This film would be much less scary if only the creature were more like these sea monkeys.
There she is, the one woman in science in the 50's
π¦#MONSTERDON Goodbye!
β€οΈ Thank you @Taweret for hosting this sweet swampy interspecies Love Boat romance.
π ±οΈ and thanks @Cherizilla for the Bingo card! Cannot beat the Gill-man stamp!
π¦And to all the members of the Real Time Film Analysis Squad: I could not begin to respond to all the great comments flying by on my TL tonight! Such a pleasure to be overwhelmed with that kind of fun.
maybe drugs were the real monster all along
Kind of disappointed there haven't been any real estate transactions in this one, I like a good real estate transaction in my monster movies
Commercials full of AI slop have definitely lowered my already-low tolerance for ads
βHeβs also taken credit for some important findings.β Academic snark FTW π #Monsterdon

I liked how the Science wasn't painfully wrong in that movie but it could do with less winch and underwater scenes...the later being the curse of many a Monsterdon movie.
Of course, i felt sorry for the Monster, who clearly had personhood and was being Colonised by men in short shorts.
That film was really good in 3d. The underwater photography looks great with the extra dimension.
#monsterdon
got his ass with the ecological crisis gun #monsterdon
Right before you spray the creature you gotta say something cool, like βSmile you son of a fish!β
#monsterdon
When the scientists drug the lagoonβ¦
#monsterdon
when the boss wants to die in glorious combat, just let him #monsterdon
I feel like "tree in the water" is a failure mode with which an Amazon boat captain should be moderately familiar
"Anything is worth a try" ... except leaving the damned thing alone
Who eats rocks? I do!
#monsterdon
#monsterdon between this movie and the African queen it makes me think being a captain on the Amazon would be a great job.
I could be gruff but jolly.
The lungfish doesn't think it's failed, it's been here for 15 million years, longer than we
"More and more we're learning the value of marine research."
Yeah, we're fast entering the Age of the Fishstick. #Monsterdon
Very good, very good. Had a creature, lagoon wasn't completely black, but it more or less delivered.
i want 3 hard minutes of science class closing exposition with the narrator explaining why swamp creatures need human women #monsterdon
the volume of the "da da DAAAA" trumpet sting is just wild surely everybody in the lagoon can hear it #Monsterdon
#monsterdon the ship is actually playing a 1001 jungle sounds record over the PA system.
I DID NOT SPEAR HIM, I DID NOT. Oh hi Mark
"I've got a hunch this creature remembers the past and more."
What creatures do NOT remember the past???
aquatic humans is one of those boomer conspiracy theories that you run across irl from time to time, my dad would sometimes mention it as a possibility. maybe this movie was like a contemporary conspiracy theory movie #monsterdon
This monster costume is definitely better than par for #monsterdon
hasn't changed in millions of years because he's JUST THAT GOOD ALREADY
Oh this is gonna be *so* racially sensitive. #Monsterdon
@emma this would make for a great meme template #monsterdon
@moira Also I really like how you had "Eccentric Monkey Owner" as a square. IMO, it was worth not getting a bingo just to have that as an option. #monsterdon
More Men in Shorts Fighting, Less Winching
OMG - the monster was us!
I award Creature From the Black Lagoon 4 out of 5 scuba tanks.
I liked it, but that might just be because it had lots of water and a cool boat. The monster costume was neat. All of the swimming scenes had Extreme Orchestral Accompaniment.
The monster didn't quite do nothing wrong, but it didn't do a lot of things wrong, so humans weren't quite the real monster.
Actually I think it just wants a hug
and just like that a singleton species that had been surviving with only one living member at a time for millions of years was made extinct because of horny #monsterdon
There's the abrupt, explanation-free ending we were looking for.
#monsterdon a bat on a string? What is this? a Dracula?
I don't really understand what the plan is and I don't really care
What was the Creature doing? Some kind of Reiki through the porthole????
"If no Bazooka, use Science"
@floatybirb I want it to be βfuck these boat people,β but I think the film makers want it to be βhorniness.β
This is romantic
underwater scenes and hot winching action
They ARE hot for each other, aren't they?!
DON'T fuck with Captain Bowieknife
Mark's starting to lose it...
Werner Herzog will see this in a few decades, on the same river...
*camera pans down the length of the Rita, showing that every crew member and scientist is standing guard, rifles in hand, all looking over the same side of the Rita, completely ignoring the other side of the craft*
Ah yes, excellent, that is how to post an effective lookout, well done
*Creature claws up the unguarded side of the boat*
Well. Ahem. Nevertheless,,,
#monsterdon what were they even watching for if they didn't notice the monster climbing up their boat?
Kill βem all and let cod sort them out
I can't tell all these handsome 50s white men apart
Since we only have one clearly identifiable female character so far I'm just going to assume the creature is female and let's see if we get a Bechdel pass under that assumption
She can use her bra to defend herself
#monsterdon Mmmm Tubi's drug commercials. βSIDE EFFECTS INCLUDE SUDDEN DEATH, IF YOU ARE DEAD, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY AND DO NOT OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY.β
I found a fossil that looks like this⦠Have you ever seen anything like it?
#monsterdon
@Bluedepth I emailed the Tubi support email address once to ask them whether they knew about #monsterdon . Never got a response.
In the end, we can only lament the Creature - who was just trying to live - and hate the Imperialists who invaded and killed.
like is the canon lore of that movie that it was going to mate with kay? is that how swamp creatures reproduce? are they a subspecies of human, and this was basically a molting event where the one swamp creature creates the egg for the next generation of swamp creature and dies while creating it #monsterdon
Nobody puts Gill-man in a corner...
Improvised weapon bingo
The creature was played by Ricou Browning who also directed the underwater sequences in Thunderball. #monsterdon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricou_Browning
The hardest part in this movie is guy swimming in a rubber suit made in the 1950s. He's lucky he didn't drown. #monsterdon
swamp monsters obey medieval rules of chivalry in combat, not taking the scuba mouthpiece out or fucking with the lines at all #monsterdon
I'll bet this all looked great in 3D!
The movie could have done a better job establishing that they can't go *around* this flotsam but it looks like plenty enough to foul the propeller which is at least as much a pain in the ass to resolve than what they're already doing, and could damage their ability to leave at all?
Leaving aside concerns about the hull which there probably aren't any, it seems to be wooden and would itself be okay passing over that I think
