"...and I need an amplifier that will turn up to 11"
Call for Phillip "Grasshopper" Morris!
We've mentioned the good folk of Massachusetts driving locusts into the sea twice, now.
I hope the grasshoppers know about the atom bomb plan and Zero Wing them all.
"We get signal!"
You can't drive them but maybe you can fly them
Yeah well the early settlers also thought lobsters were insects and refused to eat them so, you know, I wouldn't put too much stock in their ideas #Monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd
A bee call? That sounds rad. #Monsterdon
"Have you ever been duck hunting, General?" π
"If we don't drop the bomb, chicago will be destroyed."
And if you do drop the bomb? What then?
#Monsterdon π½ πΎ π« β’οΈ π¦ π¦ π¦ π±
Attract them by sensuously dancing in Lake Michegan, Peter!
entice them!
Reproduce the sound of horny locusts!
Get the reporter lady to drive them. Sheβs driven just about everyone else in this masterpiece.
Dr. Whatshisface really has a thing for the early settlers of Massachusetts, dang
If we could reproduce their call... you know, like in "Them" with the ants?
I hate it when I get out of the shower and then, SURPRISE ATOMIC LOCUST out my window.
#monsterdon
Atom bombs. Thatβs sure not to enbiggen them π #Monsterdon
"we'll get a giant fucking brush and drive them into the sea, yeah that'll work"
I'll check with Warshington
Warshington was the capital before DC #Monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd
"If we dont bomb it, we'll almost certinly lose chicago" I want to be certain we lose it!
#Monsterdon #TheBeginningOfTheEnd
Why didn't they nuke the locusts where like... nobody was?
There we go, "You Can't Drop An Atom Bomb On Chicago!"
The use of unnecessary force against giant locust has been approved
#Monsterdon #beginningoftheend1957
....Warshington? #monsterdon
"Warshington"
If we don't completely obliterate Chicago it could be destroyed. #monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd
You know that scene were King Kong sticks his finger into Fay Wrae's apartment? Yeah, we kinda did something like that with a woman burrito and a giant locust.
meh, who cares about property. go ahead and bomb chicago.
"What about the property?" The true victim of this film
#Monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd
holy crap, talk about 'nuclear option'
Oh shit the locusts are coming for our dames! #Monsterdon
"Wurshington"?
#Monsterdon #BeginningoftheEnd
THE PROPERTY! NOT THE PROPERTY!
The poor, starving locusts are huddled in the alleyways.
If you're cold, they're cold. Bring them in.
well, it is only the _second_ city
#Monsterdon π½ πΎ π« β’οΈ π¦ π¦ π¦ π±
That was a BIG OLD intrusive 'r' in 'Warshington'
In β57 you could evacuate CHI in just a few hours.
Unrelated crowd footage! That'll make this seem serious.
Men, charge! Charge at the green screen, whatever's projected there can't get us all! <bugs proceed to eat all the men>
Not a single shot of a man aims a gun, shoots, shows the locust being exploded. I suppose Berti couldn't really hurt the locusts.
YES! EAT THE FLEEING CHILDREN!!!
EAT THE BLONDE BATHING!
No money shots, but a couple of the shots looked OK.
And that, young grasshopper is how you low cuss.
this movie brought to you by kids torturing bugs in jars.
#monsterdon
Lady, a towel is not appropriate attire for a giant locust attack.
"Keep all traffic moving"
Anyone who's ever driven on the Dan Ryan:
"BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!"
Basements! I miss those since I left Illinois. #Monsterdon
Locust: "OMG help I can't get any sort of grip on this sheer photograph" #Monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd
First 20 minutes from the POV of an intrepid ex-war lady reporter. I didn't realise this movie was going to be feminist. π€π
Grasshopper has King Kong envy.
I'm fairly sure that the leading woman and leading man get together at the end. Failure to do so in your movie was a federal crime at this point.
#monsterdon
Locust w/ a taste for pretty white girls. #Monsterdon
#Monsterdon They're surprisingly good at sneaking up on people, despite all that shrieking.
pervy locust

βοΈTHE TRIVIA END π¦π¦π¦π¦π¦
The notorious B.I.G (Bert I. Gordon) provided the special effects for the film in his low-budget way. Working out of his home garage, he placed a photo of a building on a table, like the Wrigley Building, had the insects walk across it horizontally, and filmed it from above. He would blow air at them to encourage them to move.
"OK, NOW PANIC. YOU, LADY IN THE WINDOW! PROCEED TO PANIC!"
Pervy bug
wait, did they really light one of the grasshoppers on fire?
#monsterdon
y'know i'm as happy as the next idiot to joke about the postcards but these are some pretty great 1950s B&W effects shots
#Monsterdon π½ πΎ π« β’οΈ π¦ π¦ π¦ π±
the grassy hoppy climbing the building is awesome
how did that locust find a woman in a towel?
#monsterdon
The special effects are amazing.
Townspeople: :blobfoxpanic:
Shouldn't we have another giang bugs?
It seems a bit unfair that just the locust can eat people.
#monsterdon
#beginningoftheend1957
Shots of running crowds in what looks very little like Chicago.
Love how they were just having a picnic when the bugs arrived
#monsterdon #BegiiningOffTheEnd1957
DO NOT PANIC!
JUST RUN BLINDLY AND WAVE YOUR ARMS!
Ok Ok, maybe panic a little #Monsterdon
Maybe everything in the army being painted green isn't the best idea against giant locusts. #monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd
The good news is they already ate Moby #Monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd
B roll panic!!!
#monsterdon
@ricci I mean for all we know they already are
what is this crowd stock footage? it looks like they're outside a theater or something?
We'll take care of the locusts. The Chicago way!
#Monsterdon #BeginningoftheEnd
#monsterdon yeah if memory serves me - if you're sensitive to annoying sounds and at this point haven't already maybe put on some light jazz and just turn off the movie sound.
They knew the locusts were coming but still laid out a nice picnic.
#beginningoftheend
#monsterdon #grasshoppersvspostcards
Well, there goes where I grew up...
[whistles MASH theme]
Eh, it's only the south side of Chicago. What's the rush? #Monsterdon
the special effects are honestly pretty good #monsterdon
That was masterful obfuscated combat editing. Well done, editor. #Monsterdon
this is what i've been waiting for. this is transcendent. 50's army guys fighting giant grasshoppers without a hint of irony. #monsterdon
The Illinois National Guard: not the best fighting force in our military, but the closest #Monsterdon
Why are they even using infantry?
#Monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd
"They're hammering at a single point in our line" that one grunt owes the locusts money #Monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd
Am I to take it he just described the grasshoppers as being organized?
Look, any Pokemon master can tell you that fire is effective against bug!!!
Locusts have outsmarted us with their formation!
#monsterdon
SLOWLY THEY SCREECHED
INCH BY INCH
WAVE AFTER WAVE
#Monsterdon I think the locust footage would be more believable if they slowed it down a little.
There's no way they're moving that fast.
Okay. This right here is some of Burt's best work. #monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd
#Monsterdon π½ πΎ π« β’οΈ π¦ π¦ π¦ π±
I love their wiggly antennae
@amyfou Larry, Moe and Curly, chemists!? #monsterdon
Wouldn't be a Burt I Gordon film without stock footage. #monsterdon
This movie miss some locust eating people. Just a little bit gore would be nice!

βοΈTHE TRIVIA END π¦π¦π¦π¦π¦
π Look for the scene where the giant grasshopper is chasing the kids. They are actually friends and relatives of director Bert I. Gordon and Flora M. Gordon, and are fleeing down the street they live on.
