@Lazarou Oh, yeah! He literally served zero purpose in the film.
#monsterdon That's all, still eggs and other various, but hey, we're done, so title card and end-scene! Thanks @Taweret!
@ramsey or the creepy maps guy either
π¦#MONSTERDON
Need more #Monsterdon? We get it.
π [Edit: Not Tonight] Right now you can head over to another movie at https://miru.miyaku.media for part 2 of a double feature
ποΈ Next week, follow #MonsterdonAlert to see a poll where we vote on the next film.
ποΈLater @paco will send out a word cloud and data analysis for tonight's watch party
π’ Missed it and want to watch later?
@combatwombat will post a link for a replay at your leisure. We recommend watching it at work.
Anyway this concludes my #monsterdon thread for the Monster That Challenged The World, a very inaccurately titled film.
I guess the lesson was "if you're a giant snail, don't eat swimming apes, or the swimming apes might retaliate by genociding your entire species". And conversely, if you're being attacked by a giant monster try using a pointy stick.
no you're supposed to eat *chocolate* bunnies for easter, snail monster! :(((
Was that steam? Is it steamed? Are they good with garlic butter??
@bstacey This is one of those things which I expect would have been much more reasonable to people when the movie was made, I believe that's a steam pipe used for either heat or power.
As I understand it, a lot of things used to be powered using steam power, instead of everything having its own electric motor in it, so people used to be a lot more used to having steam pipes everywhere.
I like that, that was fun. the pacing was definitely⦠methodical⦠but it was fun!
@Binder Almost certainly steam for heating or power. As I understand it at the time, a lot of machines would use steam power from a central plant, instead of each having their own electric motor.
And they fucked off into the inland sea created by an engineering mistake
@wohali DON'T throw the Beaker
I feel sad for the monster. I think itβs just misunderstood.
How do they know they killed all of them?
So many questions.
Thanks @Taweret for hosting, and to all the #monsterdon kids: Don't go swimming there!
Firearms fix everything
This movie is actually an educational film about the dangers of letting children in your research lab. #Monsterdon
Have you tried axing nicely
YOU HAVE AN AXE
#Monsterdon
This part of the movie is a tragedy, where the Ladybug Girl's noble motivations (keep rabbits warm) led to ironic disaster (monster eats rabbits).
"My mommy always said there were no monsters, no real ones, but there are"
*mollusc monster moans menacingly at mother and moppet*
COFFEE, YOU SAY? :blobfoxcofeowo:
#monsterdon "Stay where you are!"
Why? That was not good advice!
the monster prefers cash, actually
"The pin on my last charge is stuck."
"Just use your teeth for godsakes."
How does the underwater 2 way coms work? #monsterdon
these guys are idiots
#Monsterdon
Thus, an elite division of naval divers was created, splooge divers.
I would not have had "helicopter finds monsters by spotting giant cum slick on the water" on my bingo card for this #monsterdon
#monsterdon "Allow yourself two minutes leeway."
No more, though. We're in a rush to get to the end of this movie.
The little girl Sandy is like, "RELEASE THE GIANT SNAIL!"
The whole premise of this movie is there are creatures we donβt understand who have killed people, and the authorities are doing everything they can to eradicate them. They havenβt once suggested trying to study and understand the creatures.
And you people laugh at us fathers guarding the home thermostat.
SEE WHAT CAN HAPPEN??
And then she passed on. When I killed her. Bits of her are still in my deep freeze. #monsterdon
How dare you killed the monster! This is California! You have any idea how much trouble you're in in 40 years when we have strict endangered species laws?
#Monsterdon
This movie includes the only extended Canal Operations Sequence I've seen in a movie, where they close some canal doors. This makes the monster scream because it was almost trapped. A second old man in a hat appears to be yelled at the police for almost stopping it.
Is Dobbs the monster in disguise
Oh no the monster ate grumpy hat man, the best male character in this movie. RIP grumpy hat man.
Yaaaay finally some more monster!
#monsterdon #TheMonsterThatChallengedTheWorld #ChallengedTheWorld1957
It's so bright out here, I need my hat to shield my eyes from the ...moonlight.
Boy they didn't even TRY with this day-to-night filter did they? They might as well just get the sun in the shot.
I appreciate the misdirection of the kids. I really can't find a lot of fault with the writing. The premise is terrible, but the writing is ok. #monsterdon
This is exactly how you get Night of the Lepus and I am not willing to be that bored
"We've got all the canals under patrol"
Yes you're doing a stellar job, obv
I bet you all didn't realize this was the prequel to Us, didja? The underground tunnels? The rabbits? It all fits.
I KNEW IT #Monsterdon
"I'm gonna sneak off while Mommy's on the phone and take the rabbits swimming!"
Silly kid, rabbits are for science
What I didn't tell any of you was that I'm typing on my laptop while watching the movie on my phone, so I can pick the movie up and walk with it when I wander the house looking for where I left my Junior Mints
"All shrimp *cocks shotgun* out of the pool."
gun! gun! gun! gun! please be ineffective
Boy this is a thrilling montage of... looking at water.
Vote YES on Proposition 14a
"You're our last hope, world's greatest map nerd"
I'm sorry this helicopter plan feels very inefficient
@xerozohar What I need is a hard-shelled search of the target area! #Monsterdon
I can't believe they had the budget for a proper helicopter shot even if it was stock footage and then sitting on the ground with the camera pointing up. #monsterdon
GOOOOOOP 2: GOOP HARDER
Soooooo many scenes in which nothing happens.
#monsterdon #TheMonsterThatChallengedTheWorld #TheMonsterThatChallengedTheWorld1957
Is there a point to the kid with the ink pens?
No street smarts! He fell for the ol' Pen That Can Write Forever grift
#monsterdon #TheMonsterThatChallengedTheWorld #TheMonsterThatChallengedTheWorld1957
"I've got a confession to make... I'm only doing this movie for free lunches"
"Get my Pointy Date Bra on...."
OH GOD I'm SO LONELY I NEED A MAN
Across the border, in Italy...
If that was "Day Posing As Night" they had the sun glistening off the water...
I hope I didn't embarrass you with my real human emotions sir
I switched over to the English audio while I made myself a cup of tea, and I enjoy Doctor Rogers's performance enough that I've keep it on.
Yea, I'm into this.
Here, let's refer to this scientific publication βΒ Life Magazine.
Depth charges not shown for budgetary reasons apparently. #monsterdon
Kill it! Kill it all! Nothing gets to keep us from the ocean!
Today on Monsterdon: zoology lessons!
i hope the snail closeup scene never ends #monsterdon
So, the kraken is a scientific fact in this film.
"The most important part is to find all its eggs. Its delicious, delicious eggs."
maybe tape some note next to the knob saying "don't turn the knob or else monster" idk #monsterdon
We're keeping the egg in the lab. We're going to observe it until it hatches, then we'll all be grievously injured
Five minutes? But I'm hungry now!
Welp, that's it, movie's over!
#monsterdon #TheMonsterThatChallengedTheWorld #ChallengedTheWorld1957
That guyβs such a back-seat spearman.
The Get The Eye Challenge
#monsterdon #TheMonsterThatChallengedTheWorld #TheMonsterThatChallengedTheWorld1957
These creatures are creaching
Jody's not looking great.
Sir, there's some kind of thing from a flyer for a Misfits show down here
#monsterdon What's the bottom like? Oh he's relaxed, had a drink... ;)
this movie has a $200,000 budget, about 2.3 million today and they are doing a lot with it #monsterdon
Wait, 1.038 R/h underwater?
9000 feet...
A reading? It's kinda dark down here, and my book is getting all soggy, but I'll give it a go.
#monsterdon This undersea photography is not nearly as good as Creature from the Black Lagoon.
wardrobe must have fucking HATED the actor who played the scientist #monsterdon
Oh I hope there are underwater scenes... /s
"Ma'am, I bet you feel pretty stupid about all the horrible things you said about Jody now, don't you? Right? Say I'm right."
It's hard watching people get into this water knowing how polluted and toxic it is now
