There are miniature shots for some earth scenes. The special effects team reused some buildings left over from Blade Runner (1982) and Ghostbusters (1984) to fill out the background.

So, y'all might be wondering why in the hell Gwildor isn't Orko. Turns out the answer is simple.

As Tom Paris will later appear in this film, we can deduce this entire film is one of his holodeck programs.

Be thankful he isn't Captain Proton.

You know, that movie was hitting all the notes for a Tokusatsu production - with the Kaijin Skeletor and his henchmen - well before most American audiences would have recognized it.

Same! The dude had seen it in the theatres but I had carefully avoided the whole franchise. This was a fun movie to watch together.

For those of you scrolling through your timeline, you're about to hit a big mass of Monsterdon postings about Masters of the Universe (1987). Be warned that you'll get an eyeful of Dolph Lungren's nipples.

Should you not wish to read through them, here's how to filter them out, at least on the web browser:
1) right click on the gears & open in a new tab
2) choose "Filters" then "Add New Filter"

The bluray has a director commentary.

He says Skeletor's palace thrown room was actually built on 2 connected sound stages. Also, the first few scenes in the movie where He-Man frees Gwildor are the last ones shot when they were crunched for money.

Yeah. That was, without a doubt, the silliest thing that I've ever watched on purpose.

I think that the fatal flaw here is the score; Flash Gordon /worked/ as a film largely on the strength of the score by Queen.

Bet they coulda got Cheap Trick to do the soundtrack 4 peanuts...

@CactuarJoe I really think this was an underlying theme throughout most of the cartoon, too. Evil-Lyn was really too good for Skeletor, and she just didn't know it. She could have done so much more evil on her own, without Skeletor weighing her down.
