The only tarantulas native to the US are _Aphonopelma_, such as _A. chalcodes_, which are tractable and wrangle-able enough; but I expect they'll be using something like the South American _Grammostola rosea_, common in the pet trade. Possibly more so at the time this movie was filmed.
