"Situation Normal, General. Just a rocket-ass turtle monster knocked out of the sky while fighting prehistoric bird things near mt. Fuji"

The rocket-ass turtle is really quite helpful, when it's not trashing your local stadium or the surrounding neighbourhoods.

the doors are moving very leisurely. Despite the musical suggestion to the otherwise.

#Monsterdon Damn, really like the Naturalist. She’s brave, sensible, and ”the only one remotely qualified.”

And of course the military has to take over. Because giant not-birds.

Lots of close-up shots in this movie. The director likes filling the lens with our leading lady's face.

Fun fact: When the dinosaur bird monsters are charging up their tongue lasers, that weird visual effect in front of their mouths is referred to as a Gyaossian blur. #monsterdon

The moral of the story is if you want to give your young daughter a gift, go to a reputable store and buy one, don't be giving her some random ancient artifact you picked up when chasing kaiju #monsterdon

i got totally taken out of the scene by that shot against the pillar of smoke, bc even that visual would have been extremely fresh in 1995, following the kuwaiti oil fires and desert storm in 1991.

like that was just a very "not godzilla universe shot" to me and i guess that is because i have only seen one other as recent as this and that was way goofier with gamera constantly getting WEDGED IN BUILDINGS #monsterdon

I gotta say, I kinda like the idea of Gamera as an ancient bioweapon. It opens up some fun possibilities with the whole psychic link thing -- did the Ancients *intend* Gamera to be powered by love, or was that a happy accident? And what happens when modern militaries inevitably try to reproduce that technology? Do weapons that start to empathize with sentient component parts remain weapons? #Monsterdon

that flickering laser death is an example of the kind of visual language that exists in the 90s but not in the old black and white ones, where such a thing is able to become a symbol only after lasers and digital communication. that is not what it looks like to extinguish a candle or for an incandescent bulb or neon to flicker out. the visual metaphor of "data lanes" with pulses of light, especially in relation to synthetic creatures requires a different world than the original godzillas. so while we lose the rubber suits for red alert 2 style missile animations, there is a new visual language that emerges and that is why it is ok to be in the 90s. #monsterdon

VFX team must have had so much fun with this movie, goddamn. So many great set pieces and they skimped on none of them.
