IIRC he wrote the script adaptation but it had treatments afterwards and he had no control over any of that. He talked in interviews about how upset he was that they took so much artistic interpretation to his own real life and fabricated events he never wrote.

what a weird film. I don't know what to make of it. Some really weird directing choices and it sets up some very heavy threads that it doesn't pursue at all (Possibility of sexual abuse?) but I thought Walken was fascinating to watch and parts of it worked for me too? Just so many weird choices. And it's based on someone's book who believes this happened to them, which is a wild thing to base a movie on and does that mean it's enabling him? I don't know! #monsterdon

That was just exactly what I look for in what @flophousepodcast calls a "Good Bad Movie." There was no plot, the characters were all terrible people and any ideas it managed to communicate were completely incoherent. But I had so much fun along the way.
